I love a good fairy tale, and television’s current fairy tale obsession couldn’t make me happier. But even I was slightly taken aback by the CW’s revamp of Beauty and the Beast. I mean, it’s one thing to put a fairy tale into the 21st century, but I just couldn’t buy into the idea of Belle — now renamed Catherine — as a crime scene investigator.

The University's McIntire Department of Music wrapped up its Chamber Music Festival Sunday. Instead of sprinkling various chamber performances throughout the year, the department consolidated four performances into one week-long festival, making January an unusually eventful month for music.

These days, most TV shows are only average - they are a little too predictable or maybe just a bit boring. Even most of this year's "good shows" are, at best, slightly above par - they keep me interested, but they're not a "watching priority."

I discovered the BBC's TV series Merlin by accident. While flipping through shows on Hulu, I happened to see a link with a picture of a dark-haired boy on it. I clicked it, and the rest, as they say, was history. Merlin is first and foremost a British TV show, hitting television waves in 2008. Since then, it has come to 183 countries and has been renewed through five seasons. Season four debuted on Syfy Jan. 6, but as my discovery of the show suggests, Merlin also enjoys a strong online fanbase which is unencumbered by airwaves or network airdates.

Fairy tales are back in vogue. With Kristen Stewart's upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) and Amanda Seyfried's 2011 flick Little Red Riding Hood, re-told fairy tales are hot commodities in the film industry, and that popularity has trickled down to television. New fantasy dramas Grimm (NBC) and Once Upon a Time (ABC) are the latest manifestations of this trend, and their take on the fairy tale universe offer up mixed results.

The University's Opera Viva - one of the only student-run opera companies in the nation - performed its 10th production, H.M.S. Pinafore, in Maury Hall last week. With well-cast leads, libretto W.S. Gilbert's witty lines and the sweeping music of composer Arthur Sullivan, the show proved to be a smashing success which deserved the standing ovation it received at the end of the performance.

Attention all bluegrass music lovers: If you walk by Old Cabell Hall between 8 and 10 p.m. Wednesdays, you can catch a jam session of bluegrass musicians.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks a TV show called Revenge sounds like a blood-and-guts action series. I can imagine a billboard featuring Bruce Willis or Mark Wahlberg with Revenge stamped across the top. A picture of a blonde girl wearing a provocative black dress would not be what I had in mind, but that's just what ABC's new show brings to the table. The new drama - airing Wednesdays at 10 p.m. - is actually more soap-opera than action, but it could be this TV season's best new guilty pleasure.

Many people roll their eyes when this show is mentioned. Others shake their heads or laugh. These same people probably tune in as a guilty pleasure when they think they are completely alone. You know what I'm talking about. Yes, that's right: the one, the only, Dancing With the Stars.

At the end of last semester, I made a discovery that changed the way I spent my study breaks for finals: NBC's brilliant comedy 30 Rock. Let's just say that I flew through the first season. Although free-streaming website Hulu.com's installation of "Hulu Prime" has cut my access to past seasons, I've managed to catch nearly half of the current fifth season on NBC. Unfortunately, season number five leads me to ask if the three-time Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy winner is taking a turn for the worse.

I admit it: I was a little hesitant to watch Winter's Bone. A few days before, I had watched the trailer and thought it looked like a doom and gloom movie that would have a depressing ending and make me want to send the director to therapy. That may be an exaggeration, but let's just say that my hopes weren't extremely high. Now, I'll be the first to admit that the film was bearable. Scratch that - I actually enjoyed it.

As a prolific and talented composer, Judith Shatin, the William R. Kenan Jr. professor in the McIntire Department of Music and founder of the Virginia Center for Computer Music, has seen and contributed to the success of many musical projects. One of her most recent composing accomplishments, an album of chamber music titled Tower of the Eight Winds, is no exception. The album earned producer Blanton Alspaugh a Grammy nomination for Classical Producer of the Year. "I was delighted to hear about Blanton's nomination," Shatin said. "He was indispensable in creating the sound of the album."
