For many, Christmas season is synonymous with holiday cheer, festive lights and visiting Santa Claus at the mall. However, the magic of Christmas fades under politicization. The so-called “War on Christmas,” whose supporters seek to prove Christian persecution within a liberal-dominated politically correct society. These arguments fall flat under further examination of Christmas — the holiday has always included elements of multiple religions and cultures, truly capturing the multiculturalism of the season. In light of Christmas’ true nature, cultural warriors should stop exploiting the holiday as a divisive spear between Americans.

Feminist dystopias reign in the cultural zeitgeist. Audiences feverishly consume episodes of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” chilled by the way the show resonates with current reality. Unfortunately, the show feels less fiction and more fact as time progresses. In a world post-Access Hollywood, Harvey Weinstein, Louis C.K. and Kevin Spacey scandals, the threshold for outrage seems to have no bounds. And as tiring as it is to continue to fight for justice and equality for women in both their public and private lives, whistleblowing is still necessary. Namely, we need to raise awareness about child marriage in the United States and eliminate support for it.

With competition culture on Grounds, there’s a general desire to be always adding accomplishments to your resume. The one thing no one wants to gain, however, is an sexually transmitted infection, or STI. Unfortunately, the probability of catching an STI is rather high — according to American Sexual Health Association, one in two sexually active people will contract an STI before the age of 25. University students need to be more aware of this risk. But even more importantly, students need to understand that sexual responsibility is connected to preserving the University’s “Community of Trust.”

It’s popular to complain about the food on Grounds. But placing general gripes about dining hall quality aside, there’s still a lot left to be disgusted with when it comes to Aramark, the University’s food provider. In particular, Aramark holds numerous contracts with multiple states’ for-profit prison systems, making a dime off many prisoners’ misery. With that considered, students should strongly evaluate the corporation which benefits from their meal plan dollars.

There’s a certain baseline understanding about tuition payments. Students understand the magnitude of their tuition statements, and for many, their ever-so-increasing level of debt. What often isn’t questioned is where students’ tuition money is allocated, a trend which needs to be reversed. Students should be more skeptical of billing procedures which appear under the University’s tuition line items. But even more importantly, students should demand better budgetary responsibility from University administrators. The student activity fee exemplifies the fiscal irresponsibility of certain tuition charges and should be reformed.

Colin Kaepernick’s “Take a Knee” movement has gained significant traction in the current zeitgeist. His first comments about the demonstration were blunt: “I’m not looking for approval; I have to stand up for people who are oppressed.” As we know, Kaepernick certainly hasn’t received universal approval. The “Take a Knee” movement consists of kneeling during the National Anthem to bring awareness to police brutality and racial injustice in the United States. Naysayers claim the act is fundamentally disrespectful to the United States, the flag and the military. However, a closer inspection of the movement and the history of peaceful protest shows that taking a knee during the anthem is actually itself an act of patriotism.

The architecture and design of the University should reflect our values. This is not a new opinion, as evidenced by the perpetual debate over the Confederate plaques on the Rotunda, or more controversially, representations of Jefferson himself around Grounds. Nonetheless, there is merit in scrutinizing our surroundings. As a community, we should be alert to imagery that directly refutes standards such as the Community of Trust. Unfortunately, there are clear examples of where the University fails to meet these standards. Lincoln Perry’s mural, “The Student’s Progress,” in Old Cabell Hall is antithetical to University values.
