Following her own experience with sexual assault as a first-year, fourth-year College student Emily Renda worked with numerous organizations around Grounds to promote sexual assault prevention — leading her all the way to the White House this spring to advise a task force on sexual assault. Renda will head to graduate school this fall, pursuing both a law degree and a master’s degree in public health.

My parents often remind me of an annoying stage I went through as a child — one I think is common to all children just beginning to explore the world.

“Oh, you must be spoiled.” It’s a sentence I have heard frequently throughout my life. To most people, disclosing you are an only child is the same as saying you are a brat. But I stand here today, in the wake of National Siblings Day — a day that always makes me feel particularly lonely — to stand up for only children everywhere and to say there is more to us than what many think.

I am generally considered to be a pretty funny person. I frequently cause entire rooms to burst into uncontrollable laughter. My fans subsequently beg me to repeat my jokes. Basically, I am the Jerry Seinfeld of our generation.

The other day, one of my friends claimed there was no such thing as an awkward situation. She argued it is a socially constructed idea, existing only inside people’s minds. Perhaps that is true — but then, is this not enough to make awkwardness a reality?

As a young child, one of the main principles I learned was to always save dessert for last. This began as a sort of mandate from my mom to ensure I did not skip over my vegetables in anticipation of the delicious chocolate to come. But as I grew old enough to decide the order of my meals for myself, this process stuck with me. After all, it is just so much better to be left with a sweet aftertaste in your mouth.

One-hundred eager students filed into Nau Hall Saturday for the second annual TEDxUVA event. With talks on topics ranging from education reform to mountain climbing, the speakers were united by a central theme — “make the path” — adopted from Stephen Colbert’s valedictory speech last spring.

Spectrum Theater presented The Vagina Monologues this weekend, in a whirlwind production just four weeks in the making. While studying in OpenGrounds one afternoon, fourth-year College students Emma DiNapoli, Jeremy Klitzman, Annie Crabill and Sam Atkeson were commiserating about their shared — yet unrealized — dream of being in an a cappella group. Feeling disenfranchised from the established a cappella scene, the students decided to take matters into their own hands — founding a group for those who love singing but have no experience doing it.

I am the person most girls hate when Valentine’s Day rolls around. As someone in a happy long-term relationship, I often find myself keeping quiet in my friends’ conversations about their boy troubles, knowing whatever I say is going to be unwelcome. If I do speak up, I inevitably get one of two responses: “Easy for you to say,” or “Stop rubbing it in our faces.”

Students piled into OpenGrounds Thursday for a Valentine’s-themed poetry slam sponsored by University Programs Council and the Collegiate Speech Team. Amid the smell of coffee and the ambiance created by a fireplace on a large TV screen, 14 poets read and performed original five-minute slam poetry pieces.

I often ponder the big questions of life: things like whether the universe is infinite, if time travel is possible and, classically, why dentists and hairstylists feel the need to talk to you during every second of your appointment.

In many ways I am a typical University student. I have always overscheduled myself, and just when I think I’ve reached my limit, I add something else to my plate and manage to make it work.
