Last year senior guard Joe Harris had a breakout season, establishing himself as the Virginia men basketball team’s best scoring option and one of the top scorers in the ACC. That status came with burden of carrying the Cavaliers’ offense — through 19 games last year, Harris had 12 games in which he attempted more than 10 shots.

The Virginia men’s basketball team, coming off a heartbreaking loss to Duke, will take on Florida State Saturday at home. The two teams faced off two weeks ago in a game the Cavaliers (12-5, 3-1 ACC) dominated, 62-50, even with an early injury to senior Joe Harris that limited him to three minutes of playing time. In the previous matchup, the Cavaliers blitzed Florida State and jumped out to a 28-13 lead. Since that loss, Florida State (11-4, 2-1) has beaten two tough teams in Clemson and Maryland.

In a season riddled with disappointment, the Virginia football team finally received some encouraging news Monday. In spite of the Cavaliers’ 2-8 record and seven-game losing streak, five-star defensive tackle Andrew Brown from Oscar Smith High School will be coming to Charlottesville early. Brown is regarded as the top defensive tackle by most, if not all, recruiting services and ESPN has him ranked as the No. 4 overall recruit for the incoming class.

After going all of last year unranked, the No. 25 Virginia men’s basketball team will enter its matchup against No. 14 Virginia Commonwealth University looking to make an early season statement. Entering the Virginia football team’s game against No. 7 Clemson, coach Mike London was tasked with ensuring that his players stepped onto the field with a competitive mindset despite facing such a talented team. Given the team’s result — a 59-10 loss — there may be questions about whether that preparation was adequate. London, however, has little doubt in his ability as a coach.

Last year, the Virginia football team allowed opposing FBS quarterbacks to complete more than 57.5 percent of their passes. This year, the Cavaliers have limited opposing quarterbacks to just a 46.3 percent completion percentage. “When it rains, it pours.” That was the theme for Virginia this past weekend as it took down the Virginia Military Institute with an offensive onslaught that racked up 580 offensive yards. It was clear that the Cavalier squad had taken full advantage of its bye week to prepare for the Keydets, but arguably no one took advantage of the bye week more than true freshman linebacker Max Valles.
