Student Council introduced an initiative last night which would convert football games into "zero-waste" events. The proposal would include composting all food products as well as implementing compostable concessions containers.

Student Council introduced a measure last night that potentially would bring a free pilot program to distribute professional newspapers at the University. The four-week trial program would distribute USA Today as well as two other newspapers around Grounds. The measure ultimately was tabled for the time being because the bill's sponsor, College Representative Marco Segura, said he wanted to debate the bill after the newly elected administration takes office next month.

Third-year Commerce student Dan Morrison, Student Council's current director of University Relations, was named the president-elect with 3,861 votes, defeating third-year College student Evan Shields. Third-year College student Aneesha Rao also was announced as the incoming vice president for organizations, and second-year College student Whit Hunter was named the incoming vice president for administration.

The Student Council Diversity Initiatives Committee announced earlier this week that it will continue its Hooliday Dining program, which offers food to students remaining on Grounds during holiday recesses. The committee will provide meal options for students who plan to stay in Charlottesville for the upcoming Spring Break.

Student Council made preliminary motions yesterday to create a new Green Initiative Funding Tomorrow Committee by introducing a bill that would allow for the new committee to raise funds for student-led sustainability projects around Grounds. Council has not yet voted on the bill as it is mandatory to leave any bill that creates a new committee tabled for a week to allow for prolonged consideration by representatives.

Avery Catlin, former computer science professor and executive vice president of the University, passed away Saturday at Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge from pneumonia. Catlin first began to teach in the Engineering School in 1948 and assumed the position of executive vice president in 1974.

Both candidates are running for Perriello's seat in the House of Representatives, which is up for grabs in next week's election. State Sen. Robert Hurt, R-Danville, did not attend the event.

Student Council unanimously passed a bill at its meeting last night dedicated to encouraging suicide prevention and honoring individuals who have committed suicide as a direct or indirect result of bullying. The resolution names nine teenagers across the country who recently took their lives, as well as Kevin Morrissey, the late managing editor of the Virginia Quarterly Review whose former boss is currently being investigated for abusive office practices.

Several minority student organizations met with University and Charlottesville police officers yesterday night in New Cabell Hall in an attempt to raise awareness about protocol in bias-motivated incidents. Roughly 30 students, faculty and community members attended the meeting organized by the Black Student Alliance.
