The University community saw seven new cases Wednesday, bringing the total number of active student cases to 73 and the total number of active faculty and staff cases to 15.

The University’s COVID-19 tracker reported 16 new cases Wednesday. Of the new cases, 14 were students and two were faculty and staff. This is a slight increase from over the weekend, during which seven cases were reported.

While applying into majors and sustaining a social life are among the many obstacles students have faced this year, many feel more comfortable with the situation when compared to their feelings last March.

Three committees of the Board of Visitors — The Buildings and Grounds Committee, the Committee on the University of Virginia’s College at Wise and the Audit, Compliance and Risk Committee — met Friday morning to discuss a number of projects and plans for the coming years as well as give reports on internal affairs within the University.

Third-year College students Mj Smith and Jayla Hart accepted offers to serve as resident staff co-chairs for the 2021-22 academic year on Feb 23. The positions — which they will hold until May 2022 — include responsibilities such as leading Housing and Residence Life senior staff training meetings, reviewing applications for and managing a team of 240 staffers and providing recommendations for changes to Housing and Residence Life’s mission and policies. HRL provides on-Grounds housing for approximately 7,000 students, ranging from first-years living in dorms to upperclassmen in apartment-style housing.

A Charlottesville resident jogging across the crosswalk at the intersection of Main Street and Roosevelt Brown Boulevard was struck by an oncoming car Friday between 4:52 p.m. and 4:59 p.m. At the time of the incident, the organization BLM 757 was leading a protest at the intersection. The pedestrian hit by the car was not involved with the ongoing protest within the intersection.

Cases of COVID-19 on Grounds continue to steadily decline after last week’s spike, with 26 new cases reported Wednesday. Twenty-four of the cases reported were students and two were among faculty and staff. Despite the decline, there are still 912 active cases in the University community.

Each Monday at 4 p.m. this semester, the 35 students enrolled in “History of Mr. Jefferson’s University” join Zoom or enter McLeod Hall to participate in a dialogue with speakers who have shaped the University’s history. The interdisciplinary class aims to provide students with a more nuanced understanding of the history of the University.

The University released early action decisions Friday, extending offers of admission to 6,187 candidates out of a total of 28,897 applicants — a 21.4 percent offer rate. 40 percent of those admitted are students of color, 7 percent are foreign nationals and 46 percent are white.

The University’s Division for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion began a series of events celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday. This year the community celebration draws its theme — “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?” — from Dr. King’s fourth and final book before his 1968 assassination. The series, which will end Jan. 31, includes speaker panels, an essay contest and mutual aid campaigns.

Despite a year of virtual programming and Zoom events instead of the typical in-person panels and tours offered to prospective students and parents, the University received 47,827 total applications for its target of 3,800 spots in the Class of 2025 — a 17 percent increase from last year. The University also offered admission to 968 early decision applicants, a 33 percent acceptance rate.

Second-year students applying into programs such as the McIntire School of Commerce and Honors Politics programs expressed concern that taking classes for credit/general credit/no credit this semester will not only impact their chances of admission into competitive programs, but could also limit their opportunities for graduate programs in the future.
