A pit stop at Bodo’s Bagels is a must-do at the University. Students swing by Bodo’s on the Corner to fuel study sessions, cure hangovers and catch up with friends over a weekend brunch. Though more conventional orders — like a bagel with cream cheese or an egg sandwich — are common, many students concoct more peculiar orders. This week, my friends and I called upon more seasoned patrons for Bodo’s inspiration, trying five of the most intriguing Bodo’s sandwiches recommended to us by our fourth-year friends. Some of these orders demonstrated the elderly wisdom of the eldest class, but others made us wonder whether these soon-to-be graduates — and their palates — are ready for adult life.

After my big in my sorority and I spread the word about our dining experience at Oakhart Social last month, the rest of our “family” — including my cousin, grandbig and great-grandbig — wanted seats at the table, too. As we all sent suggestions in our group chat for somewhere that we could affordably dine, my great-grandbig suggested Thai Cuisine and Noodle House, citing the drunken noodles as the best she has ever had. The price point was almost as appealing as the food itself, with most options under $17 and the most expensive item we ordered costing just $13.50.

Last weekend, I was paired with my big, Ella, within my sorority. She raved to me about Oakhart Social and suggested that we go there for a family-style dinner with another big-little pair. Ella had been to the restaurant before and described it to me as American cuisine with a twist and was particularly fond of its shareable menu items and rustic ambiance. Comparable to tapas, Oakhart Social’s small plates are almost all priced under $30, which enables diners to taste-test numerous items.

Before departing Charlottesville for spring break, my friends and I had two things on our to-do lists — fill our gas tanks and fill our bellies. However, we were each in the mood for something different. In order to satisfy everyone’s cravings, we decided to go somewhere with a diverse menu, and we settled on the Blue Moon Diner, recommended to me by two other food writers for The Cavalier Daily. The restaurant was reasonably priced relative to its ample portion sizes — with the average dish priced below $15 — making the diner perfect for an affordable outing with friends.

One of the most challenging non-academic feats for first-year students is learning to fashion dining hall food into delectable meals. If you’re struggling on this front, these dorm snacks make the perfect solution. Here is a compilation of sweet and salty inventions that my friends and I enjoy — all from the comfort of our dorms.
