I never go anywhere without my earphones. Since high school, it’s simply been a rule of thumb. Leaving the apartment? I grab my earphones. Walking to class? I use my headphones. In class? Until now, I had been fortunate enough to never need a spontaneous healthcare visit.

“I’ll take,” I paused, beating my student ID against the table in thought. “A medium coffee, um, maybe with an extra shot of espresso?”

For me, it was just another afternoon. For the people gathered around the small chapel, it was an afternoon that marked a milestone in the lives of an enthusiastic couple.

“It’s not what I expected,” a voice said from down the hall.
