All Greek life organizations and a number of clubs on Grounds must have full member completion of a new anti-hazing training by Nov. 15, in compliance with the newly-passed Adam’s Law in Virginia. Members will be able to choose from among 19 different dates to attend a Hoos Against Hazing in-person hazing prevention training session — otherwise, organizations will face deactivation.

The University’s Board of Visitors Finance Committee met and approved the budgets for the University’s academic division, medical center and the College at Wise June 2. It also approved a $100 million investment in the Strategic Investment Fund, which provides funding to support key initiatives of the University of Virginia’s 2030 Plan.

Wednesday marked University founder Thomas Jefferson’s 279th birthday. To commemorate his legacy, the University and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello joined together to host a series of events known as Founder’s Day.

Following the success of the Common Grounds documentary released last November, a group of Center for Politics interns are again aiming to demonstrate the power of individuals with diverse political views coming together and sharing their views. To do so, the interns have issued the Common Grounds challenge — tasking high schools and universities throughout the country with organizing roundtable conversations amongst students.

Third-year Batten student Holly Sims and third-year College student Karissa Ng have been selected as the new co-chairs of Housing and Residence Life student co-chairs for the 2022-23 academic year. During their tenure, Sims and Ng plan to centralize the importance of HRL staff acting as a “united front” amidst COVID-19 challenges and stress the importance of valuing each and every one of their staffers. The pair will replace Mj Smith and Jayla Hart, current co-chairs of HRL and fourth-year College students.

Black History Month, a time of pride, celebration and remembrance during the month of February, was first recognized in the U.S. in 1976 under former president Gerald R. Ford. It began as a way to commemorate efforts of the African diaspora, and was developed from the efforts of Carter G. Woodson — a Virginian scholar who sought to dedicate a week in February to the coordinated teaching of Black history in public schools.

Two delegates and senators from the Virginia General Assembly attended a legislative forum at Alumni Hall Dec. 13 from 12 to 1 p.m. Each presented opening statements followed by a live question-and-answer session. About 70 University and Charlottesville community members attended the event.

Last month, the University announced vaccinated individuals will be allowed to remove their masks while using cardio equipment, swimming and in group fitness classes when participants can still socially distance. This does not include other cardio-related activities, such as using the track or during activities that occur on the basketball court, such as intramural sports or club basketball.

After being arrested for a misdemeanor assault committed during his first year, Class of 2013 College alumnus Jared Brown has actively worked to improve the lives of other young people of color and was recently pardoned for his arrest by Governor Ralph Northam.

Republican Glenn Youngkin was elected Governor of Virginia on Election Night, beating out Democratic nominee Terry McAuliffe, who previously served as governor from 2013 to 2017. Incumbent Democrat Sally Hudson was also reelected to represent the 57th District in the Virginia House of Delegates and Democrats Juandiego Wade and Brian Pinkston were elected to serve on Charlottesville’s City Council.

The University’s Young Alumni Reunion returned last Saturday after being canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Class of 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 were invited to the event, which was held at the Ting Pavilion on the Downtown Mall from 9 p.m. to midnight. During the event, alumni gathered for food, dancing, drinks, a DJ and snacks from local food trucks.

With a little over a month until Election Day, members of the Democracy Initiative's Student Advisory Council, University Democrats and College Republicans joined together to watch the final debate between Republican nominee Glenn Youngkin and Terry McAuliffe, former governor and Democratic nominee, in Nau Hall Tuesday. The debate was hosted by NBC News political director Chuck Todd.

This year, when incoming students and new faculty were assigned computing IDs — a custom username required to log into online University systems — they looked a little different from the past. Instead of following the traditional pattern of using the first, middle and last initials of a person’s name, the University’s Information Technology department decided to randomize the characters used.

As the University prepares for the start of a new semester, students will see a new face leading the office of the dean of students — longtime University employee Julie Caruccio, who stepped into the role July 1. Caruccio replaces former Dean of Students Allen Groves, who now serves at Syracuse University after 14 years at U.Va.

A coalition of contracted independent organizations at the University came together Thursday and Friday to organize a virtual two-day walk out to draw attention from the administration on demands and reparations centered around the University’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The groups’ demands included meeting 100 percent of students’ financial need, distributing hazard pay to University employees and acknowledging the University’s complicity in the COVID-19 outbreak that followed in-person Inter-Fraternity Council and Inter-Sorority Council recruitment, among others.
