The No. 23 Virginia men’s soccer team traveled to South Bend, Ind. Saturday afternoon for its most daunting test of the year: a road game against unbeaten No. 2 Notre Dame. If you were to grab the box scores from the Virginia men’s soccer team’s last nine games, put them in a pile, shuffle them and pick one at random, it would not matter which you selected. Like any good magic trick, the result would not change.

Virginia earned its first ACC win on Saturday in a 2-0 victory against new member Syracuse in the Cavaliers’ fourth conference match of the season. Though the players certainly would have preferred a faster start to the season, they understand that results are difficult to come by given the high level of play in the ACC.

The Klöckner Stadium crowd had begun its slow exit Friday night with the Virginia soccer team trailing N.C. State 3-2 with only minutes remaining. Stadium ushers put on their jackets preparing to leave and fans rose from their place on the bleachers preparing to leave. The energy that had coursed through the stadium when sophomore midfielder Marcus Salandy-Defour scored a game-tying penalty kick in the 77th minute had evaporated when the Wolfpack once again pulled in front in the 87th minute. All that remained for the Cavaliers were a few desperate seconds.

The Virginia men’s soccer team turned what could have been an unequivocal and demoralizing setback against a conference foe into an uplifting, albeit incomplete comeback against No. 15 Wake Forest in Winston Salem, N.C. Friday. Ultimately, a three-goal deficit proved too much for the Cavaliers to overcome as their furious late-game rally came up short in a 3-2 loss.

Ask a member of the Virginia men’s soccer team, coach or player, about Jeff Gal, and he will likely describe the sophomore goalkeeper’s “presence.” Presence, though, is a vague word of varied associations. Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard has a certain presence when he steps to the free throw line, as does New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez these days in the Bronx. Ignoring these dubious connotations, however, we can recognize that some of the soccer greats have been described as having “presence” on the pitch.

The Virginia men’s soccer team looked to be in for a rough night when sophomore forward Brian James whiffed on an attempted cross in the early minutes of Monday night’s game against St. John’s. And later, sophomore goalkeeper Jeff Gal bent to pick up a slow-rolling ball but made contact just outside the penalty box, resulting in a St. John’s free kick.

The National Lacrosse Hall of Fame inducted five men as its inaugural class in 1957. In fact, in each of the Hall’s first 35 years of existence, only men joined the sport’s most cherished institution. Though Rosabelle Sinclair gathered the first women’s college lacrosse team at Bryn Mawr in 1926, the Hall did not recognize a female star until her induction in 1992.
