Virginia cross country opened its season Friday with the UVa Duals at Panorama Farms. Both the men’s and women’s teams rested their starters for this early-year four-kilometer race, giving young up-and-comers a chance to shine.

The Virginia softball team took both games of their doubleheader Wednesday afternoon against Liberty. The Cavaliers (8-40, 1-22 ACC) put forward a tremendous effort in all facets of the game to douse the Flames (7-42, 2-19 Big South) by a combined score of 16-4.

Virginia track and field wrapped up three days of competition at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday, with the Cavalier women finishing seventh with 60 points while the men placed eighth after collecting 53 points. Florida State was the champion for both the men’s and women’s sides.

Virginia softball concluded the home portion of its ACC schedule this weekend against No. 22 Notre Dame. The Cavaliers’ (6-38, 1-22 ACC) bats betrayed them in the first two games before coming alive in a thrilling Senior Day game, though ultimately the squad still lost all three matchups.

Virginia track and field opened its outdoor season just four weekends ago with the Virginia Cup in Charlottesville. Now, the team is already preparing for the start of the conference championships — such is the nature of track and field in the ACC. Beginning Thursday, the Cavaliers will compete for three days against conference foes for this season’s title.

Virginia softball was swept by in-state rival Virginia Tech as the two faced off this past weekend. The Cavaliers (6-35, 1-19 ACC) had difficulties even staying close with the Hokies (27-16, 16-6 ACC), losing each game by no less than six runs.

Lannigan Field was the scene for a showdown Saturday between three of the nation’s finest public universities: Virginia, Cal and Michigan. Both the Virginia men’s and women’s track teams placed second in the tri-meet — a vast improvement from last year’s showing in Berkeley, Calif.

Virginia track and field will split its team to compete in two separate meets this weekend. Sprinters and members of relay teams will travel to the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, while distance runners will stay much closer to home at the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina. Athletes in field events will be found in both meets.

Virginia track and field began the outdoor portion of their season Saturday with the Virginia Cup at Lannigan Field. The women’s team went 5-0 against James Madison, Norfolk State, Hampton, Liberty, and Radford while the men’s team went 3-1 with a loss to Liberty.
