Last fall, a group of University students decided to make a film. They aimed to submit the final product product — a narrative short film, done with professional equipment and set to its own original score — to national, regional and student film festivals, including to the Sundance Film Festival. The script for “Fifth Street” was completed by Winter Break and the crew will travel to Warrenton in mid-May for the shooting.

Wes Anderson’s debut feature was “Bottle Rocket,” the low-budget comedy he wrote with his buddy Owen Wilson shortly after graduating from the University of Texas at Austin. The film received generally positive reviews, but it grabbed critics’ attention less for the picture itself and more for the potential it showed Anderson had if he was given time to develop his technique, articulate his voice and secure an adequate budget.

Following the release of his latest feature, The Wind Rises, 73-year-old animator Hayao Miyazaki announced his retirement from filmmaking. With Miyazaki’s world-renowned filmography including titles such as “Spirited Away” and “Princess Mononoke,” “The Wind Rises” marks the end of an era in cinema.
