Arthur Benjamin, a mathematics professor at Harvey Mudd College, delivered a TED talk in 2009 in which he challenged the educational approach to mathematics in high school. Benjamin expressed his dissatisfaction with calculus as the culmination of high school mathematics. Benjamin suggested a new pedagogical paradigm for high schools. Probability and statistics, he contends, should receive more emphasis as they are more worthwhile and pragmatic to the average American.

A Gallup poll confirmed in July that approximately half of all Americans support nationwide legalization of same-sex marriage. With the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, it appears that same-sex marriage across the United States is as inevitable as interracial marriage was prior to the watershed case Loving v. Virginia.

At the beginning of the school year, Dean of Students Allen Groves addressed concerns about the University’s racial climate at “I Reconsidered…”, a mandatory event for first-year students. Speaking in front of our entire class, Dean Groves revisited the May incident in which a malicious racial epithet was discovered painted on Beta Bridge. Groves drew applause and laughter when he looked into the audience and said, in reference to the perpetrator: “Well, that’s just one jackass.”
