Sophomore cross country runner Katie Gambale is an ordinary collegiate athlete. She doesn't set records with her races. Students don't walk by her, turn to their friends and say, "Did you see her? That was Katie Gambale!"

Abby Taylor, the only true senior on the Virginia field hockey team, is no stranger to adversity on the field. She was there in 2004 when the Cavaliers finished 10-10, and in 2005 when they finished 8-11. She knows what it's like to be part of a team that is in the basement of the ACC. Being a Cavalier before 2006 was not an easy experience.

The weather in Virginia's two regional field hockey matches last weekend could not have contrasted more. Against William & Mary Friday evening, the steady rain splashed against the spongy Turf Field, whereas Sunday's match against James Madison featured clear skies and a refreshing breeze. The performance of the Cavaliers, however, did not waiver, as they held off William & Mary in a 2-1 victory and followed Sunday with a 3-1 dismissal of James Madison.

All season, the Virginia field hockey team has been talking about the importance of games against Big South opponents. So far, No. 17 Virginia has justified its ranking relative to its regional counterparts, defeating unranked Richmond and falling to No. 13 Old Dominion in a hard-fought contest.

In a back-and-forth goal-scoring frenzy at Turf Field, the Virginia field hockey offense prevailed in a 4-3 victory over Richmond yesterday. The potent offense made up for a lackluster defense that allowed three goals on just six shots, including Richmond's first two shots of the game.

Sunday's disappointing loss against Penn State was a tale of two halves. A solid first half in which the Cavaliers outshot the Nittany Lions 5-2 gave Virginia a 1-0 edge, but the Cavaliers surrendered three goals and were outshot 8-4 in the second half. In the team's first regional match tonight against Richmond, the top priority will be to maintain a high level of play from the opening faceoff to the final whistle.

Between 2002 and 2005, the Virginia field hockey program was never better than mediocre. For this three-year period, the number zero appears on the stat sheets in numerous categories, including ACC wins and NCAA Tournament appearances. Not once did the Cavaliers achieve better than a .500 record, nor did they escape from the cellar in the ACC.

By the end of last year, Virginia had established itself as a member of the country's field hockey elite, compiling a 14-8record with the fifth-toughest schedule in the nation. The Cavaliers finished the season ranked in the top 10 nationally and received their first NCAA Tournament bid since 2001. They also notched their first ACC victory in six years, and to top it all off, head coach Michele Madison was given national coach of the year honors by womensfieldhockey.com in her first year with the team. The Cavaliers were not able to ride the wave of momentum from last season, however, as they dropped their first game Sunday to Penn State 3-1.

After a breakout season last year in which Virginia secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001, the Cavaliers return this year with the weight of a No. 8 preseason ranking on their shoulders. With the loss of last year's six seniors, however, the team will have to rely on significant contributions from the Class of 2011.

Following a somber five minutes of silence dedicated to the victims of the shootings at Virginia Tech prior to the start of the game, the Virginia baseball team set emotions aside to put away in-state foe Richmond 12-5.

The No. 6 Virginia baseball team is coming off an emotional roller-coaster ride in their 1-1 series split with Georgia Tech last weekend. Virginia lost game one on a suicide squeeze Friday but then rebounded to take game two on a walk-off homerun. Since Sunday's game was canceled because of inclement weather, the team is able to take a deep breath before finishing its short home stand tonight against Richmond. This is the second time the two teams have met this season, with Virginia taking the first meeting 11-1 March 20.

Following a much-needed road win against VCU Tuesday, the No. 5 Virginia baseball team returns home this weekend to take on ACC rival Georgia Tech. The series is vital for both teams, as the Cavaliers sit one spot ahead of the Yellow Jackets in the ACC Coastal Division standings.

The Virginia men's lacrosse team has proven so far that its defense is strong enough to protect last year's national championship. In 11 games the Cavaliers have dominated groundballs, controlling 504 to opponents' 405; have caused 108 turnovers to opponents' 76; and have allowed only 76 goals.

LEXINGTON, VA -- A season-high 1,265 fans filled the seats of Grey-Minor Stadium on a gorgeous evening for baseball in Lexington. The VMI squad did not disappoint, as the Keydets defeated the No. 3 Cavaliers 5-2, snapping a five-game winning streak for Virginia. The Cavaliers represented the highest ranked opponent that the Keydets have beaten in school history.

As a sports writer for The Cavalier Daily, I find that one of the indirect consequences of covering a team, especially a non-major sport like baseball, is to increase turnout at games, particularly among my fellow students. The effect that my articles have on attendance, however, depends greatly on the team's performance -- anything short of a Pamela Anderson appearance during the seventh-inning stretch won't lure fans out to cheer on a lackluster squad.

During the 30 minute delay to the game yesterday due to the late arrival of a referee, the tension in Klöckner stadium built in preparation for what was billed as a clash between two titans of women's lacrosse. The No. 7 Cavaliers, however, set the pace of the game from the start to finish their convincing 15-4 defeat over No. 3 Maryland.

Going into Spring Break last week, the Cavalier baseball team was rolling in success. They had gone 12-0 in their first (and longest) homestand of the year. They had reached a ranking of No. 5 in Collegiate Baseball with an overall record of 15-1. Their only loss of the season came on the road against No. 29 Coastal Carolina, in a 3-2 pitcher's duel. The pitching staff had dominated opponents with a stellar ERA of 1.54. If momentum means anything, then knocking off unranked Wake Forest in the team's first conference series shouldn't have been too much to ask, right?

In a game that hung in the balance going into the ninth inning at Davenport Field, the Cavaliers were able to fight off a scrappy team from VMI 5-3 for their ninth straight victory. With the win, the Cavaliers maintained their unblemished home record of 9-0.

After reeling off eight wins in eight days, No. 9 Virginia (10-1) looks to remain unbeaten at Davenport Field as they take on VMI (5-2) tonight. This game marks the ninth of a 12-game home stand for Virginia.
