After avenging an earlier season loss to Duke Thursday, the No. 14 Virginia women’s lacrosse team hoped to repeat the action Friday afternoon against No. 2 Maryland. The Cavaliers had every reason to believe they could pull the upset — they had won six of their last seven games and had played the Terrapins just more than two weeks ago, tying the game at eight midway through the second half before Maryland netted five unanswered to ultimately prevail.

The No. 14 Virginia women’s lacrosse team has been nearly unstoppable of late, and it continued the trend Thursday, defeating No. 7 Duke in the first round of the ACC tournament, 7-5. The Cavaliers (10-7, 4-4 ACC) have now won six of their last seven games and have earned a rematch in the tournament’s semifinals with Maryland — the school responsible for the team’s only blemish during its current run.

On March 22 — just more than a month ago — the No. 14 Virginia women’s lacrosse team took a long, somber bus ride from Durham, North Carolina back to Charlottesville. This was not the way the Cavaliers had expected their season to go. The preseason excitement was gone, with Virginia falling to 4-6 overall and 0-3 in the ACC after a 16-11 loss against No. 7 Duke.

Riding a three-game winning streak, the No. 16 Virginia women’s lacrosse team took on the sixth ranked team in the nation Thursday evening. The Cavaliers’ (8-6, 2-3 ACC) confidence translated to the field, as they jumped out to a 7-6 first half lead in the game, never trailing No. 6 Boston College (10-4, 2-4 ACC) to secure a 16-14 win.

Now, the long season which began with its first meet in October has one more stop for No. 7 Virginia — Minneapolis, Minn., for the NCAA women’s swimming and diving championships.
