The first few weeks of the 2014 season have proved to be a difficult challenge for Virginia. The Cavaliers, faced with one of the nation’s toughest schedules, lost four games against top-10 ranked opponents, including multiple in which the opponent’s second half run sunk a chance for a Virginia victory.

The past week has been nothing short of sensational for the No. 5 Virginia men’s basketball team. After earning its first outright regular season ACC championship since 1981 with a dominant win against Syracuse, Virginia claimed its first top-five ranking in more than a decade. To top it off, redshirt sophomore guard Malcolm Brogdon was named co-ACC player of the week Monday after scoring a career-high 19 points against then-No. 4 Syracuse — the first such honor for any Cavalier this season.

Desperate for a win against a ranked opponent, No. 9 Virginia women’s lacrosse finally pulled through against No. 8 Penn State, winning 12-11. After going back and forth for the first 30 minutes, the Cavaliers (2-3, 0-1 ACC) used a second half surge to survive a late Penn State (2-2, 0-1 ACC) run to earn their first victory in four attempts against another ranked team.

After suffering two disappointing losses to ranked opponents in No. 4 Northwestern and No. 6 Loyola Maryland, the No. 9 Virginia women’s lacrosse team notched its first win of the season against Richmond Wednesday night, dominating 18-9. Despite giving up 19 turnovers, most of which came early in the game, coach Julie Myers saw Virginia’s performance as solid overall.

Throughout its 2013-2014 season, the No. 7 Virginia women’s swimming and diving team has been nothing short of spectacular. With an 11-1 dual meet record – the only loss coming against No. 6 Texas – broken school records and conference awards, coach Augie Busch couldn’t have envisioned more when he became the Cavaliers’ coach last summer.

Virginia sent its 20 seniors off with a bang Saturday as the Cavaliers, in front of their home crowd for the first time in three months, dominated the visiting Panthers. The No. 7 Virginia women’s swim team defeated Pittsburgh, 189-103, while the No. 20 Virginia men’s team also secured the win, 179-112. Virginia gained victories in 31 of the meet’s 32 events, making it the program’s most dominant win of the ACC season.

In their first game of the 2014 season, No. 8 Virginia women’s lacrosse team traveled to Atlanta, Ga. to face No. 4 Northwestern on a neutral field. The Cavaliers fell just short of avenging last season’s loss to the Wildcats, as Northwestern scored the go-ahead goal with 16.7 seconds remaining and held on for a thrilling 13-12 win.

After an emotional meet last weekend against rival North Carolina, the Virginia swim and dive teams had mixed results Saturday against North Carolina State. The No. 9 Virginia women’s team defeated the Wolfpack, 178.5-115.5, while the No. 20 Virginia men’s team fell to No. 21 NC State, 157-141.

Any dual-meet can be exciting for swimmers and fans alike, but one that comes down to the final event against a bitter rival is sure to be nothing short of legendary. When the Virginia swim and dive team faced rival North Carolina Saturday, both the men’s and women’s meets came down to the final event, with the women defeating the Tar Heels 152-146, and the men coming up just short, falling 154-145.

For the second straight week, a Virginia swimmer was recognized as ACC Female Swimmer of the Week. The ACC announced Tuesday this week’s honor would be given to junior Ellen Williamson for her performance against Duke and North Carolina last weekend. Williamson led the Lady Cavaliers to victories in both of their dual meets.

While the annual North Carolina matchup receives the most hype of any meet for the Cavaliers, Virginia first had to take care of business against Duke Friday and then go head-to-head against the rival Tar Heels. They did so with relative ease, as the No. 9 Virginia women were victorious against Duke, 187.5-98.5, while No. 20 Virginia men defeated the Blue Devils, 178-119.

Adding to her already record-setting first year, Leah Smith was awarded ACC Female Swimmer of the Week honors Tuesday for her performance against Virginia Tech, Wisconsin and Miami last weekend in Christiansburg, V.A. Smith helped propel the lady Cavaliers to victories in each of their three dual meets.
