By the time July rolls around, “midsummers” may mean a rowdy party for most students in Charlottesville. But for sports fans, it marks the point when major sports seasons are finally in full swing. With Major League Baseball roaring into the All-Star Break, the NBA in the midst its wild free-agency season, hockey teams hosting development camps for their newly drafted prospects, and the NFL gearing up for minicamps (not to mention a little soccer tournament going on the past few weeks in Brazil), it can be tough to determine the most important events of the summer.

The Virginia women’s soccer team had a record-breaking 2013 season which resulted in an ACC Regular Season Championship and a trip to the NCAA Final Four. Despite facing one of the toughest schedules in the country, the Cavaliers posted 24 wins with an average margin of victory of nearly three goals.

The No. 8 Virginia men’s lacrosse team used a 3-0 run in the fourth quarter of the ACC Showcase Saturday to earn a 13-11 win against sixth-ranked North Carolina. The win marks the Cavaliers’ first conference victory since their 17-12 thrashing of Syracuse March 1.

The Cavaliers trailed the Blue Jays for the majority of the second half, but were able to force overtime thanks in large part to a brilliant performance by freshman goalkeeper Matt Barrett, who made 16 saves.

After watching a 12-4 lead evaporate in the fourth quarter, Virginia needed a goal with less than one second remaining to force overtime and squeeze out a win.

The No. 13 Virginia women’s tennis team began its season in dominating fashion, trouncing William & Mary 5-2 Wednesday. Both squads were missing star players in the contest, with Cavalier sophomore Julia Elbaba and Tribe senior Jeltje Loomans sitting out. Each player contributes immensely to her team’s success, with Elbaba checking in as the ninth-ranked singles player in the nation and Loomans forming half of the No. 7 double’s team in the country.

The No. 13 Virginia women’s tennis team kicks off the spring season Wednesday with a showdown against in-state foe No. 40 William & Mary, a match that will see seven players ranked in the top 100 in the country square off. The two squads already know each other well, as several of the athletes clashed at the Tribe Invitational during the fall season.

The No. 1 and top-seeded Virginia women’s soccer team will travel to Cary, N.C. on Friday to make its first College Cup appearance since 1991. Virginia will face UCLA, the only team from outside of the ACC to make the Final Four.
