As a chronic snacker, I’m always looking for something delicious to eat between meals. I love to fill my fridge with fresh vegetables, and I can’t stay away from chips and hummus. My usual snacking routine has felt a little stale as of late, so I decided to stop by Trader Joe’s and add some variety to my fridge.

Online classes have dramatically changed everyone’s study habits — and they’ve consequently changed everyone’s eating habits as well. Working from home has pushed me to order less and cook more, but I’m still missing the convenience of a five-minute wait for my $5 bagel at Bodos and of stopping by Roots for a quick, healthy lunch.

Every Friday night of my adolescence was spent enjoying an informal but delicious Shabbat dinner at my Grandma Charlotte’s house. Her table was always set with Challah bread, fresh fruit, baked salmon and the best matzo ball soup I’ve ever tried. I recently decided to try my hand at her recipe, and — with a few simple modifications — I’ve made a soup that is not only delicious but simple and foolproof.

This year, one of my roommates started baking bread from scratch. She mastered the crusty, golden loaf and every house dinner we had was graced with a pan of freshly-baked bread straight from the oven. When she went home for winter break I knew I had to take matters into my own hands.

For me, winter break is all about the food. I love experimenting with new recipes and trying to find ways to incorporate all the healthy fruits and vegetables that my diet so sorely lacks during the school year. I came up with two new recipes over this long winter break that are both filling and delicious.

This summer I was making a cheese board and had a total craving for pimento cheese. After looking up a few recipes to find the correct cream cheese to cheddar ratio, I went right to the grocery store. At the store, I couldn’t find pimentos anywhere, but inspiration struck and I picked up a fresh jalapeno pepper.

As our world — Charlottesville included — continues to roll back coronavirus-related restrictions, more restaurants are opening with increased options for diners. Plenty of Corner favorites are back with takeout, delivery and sit-down meals. In this time of uncertainty, a delicious meal can go a long way to restore a sense of normalcy, and supporting local businesses is always an added bonus. Let this be your guide to both a responsible yet delicious meal on the Corner.

Few foods can compare to the potato’s versatility of form and universal appeal. Its mild flavor and common partnership with butter, salt and oil make it one of the most irresistible vegetables. It’s rare to meet a potato dish that does not inspire a positive reaction. While meditating on my love for potatoes in all forms, I recalled a reading from my history of English course — Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “How Do I Love Thee?”

Pasta is — besides cereal and eggs — one of the most accessible meals for a novice chef. There is little to no skill involved in the process, and it is nearly impossible to make all of those delicious carbs taste bad. However, there is a huge difference between average college-student pasta — just butter and noodles — and truly delicious pasta. This recipe is just as easy to make as average pasta, but the flavors epitomize home-cooked vegetarian pasta at its best. Furthermore, the ingredients are affordable and last for ages because fresh produce is not required.

My brother Jonah is a fantastic cook. You can find him in the kitchen at all hours experimenting with new flavors and recipe ideas — in fact, every year for his birthday he asks for a new frying pan or chef’s knife. Since his employment in the kitchens of Junction and Prime 109, his skillset has grown immensely. His growth as a cook was clearly evident when he cooked dinner for me and my friends a few nights ago. Everything he made was delicious, but the guacamole was gone in the blink of an eye. I love this guacamole recipe because of its simple fresh ingredients. There is also plenty of room to customize and make this recipe your own.

Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but really, what college student has the time to make a warm, nutritious breakfast every morning? The same routine of granola bars and a piece of fruit can only continue for so long. I have a delicious solution to this problem with three variations of my warm oats recipe.

The newly-opened Thyme & Co. is a wonderful addition to the Corner. Overall, the fast-casual Lebanese cuisine is satisfying and delicious, offering flatbreads and salads that provide unique alternatives to typical Roots orders.

The lifestyle of a college student is not one that easily supports veganism. From late-night bites to dining hall limitations, it may seem impossible at first sight. I myself am not vegan, but when I heard about the organization Bad Vegan, it made me want to try.

I love avocado toast, but who doesn’t? Unfortunately, sometimes — no matter how perfectly ripe your avocado or how crispy your toast — it just tastes average and dull. I found myself growing tired of the same routine, so I decided to spice it up. I created three delicious and easy recipes, so you can experiment with these foolproof recipes in order to rejuvenate your love for avocado toast.

When I began my first year, I couldn’t wait to set up my dorm room and settle into my new life, but I soon realized that one of the things I missed the most about home was the fresh coffee my parents brewed every morning. Keurig cups can’t quite compare to fresh coffee in terms of strength and flavor. To make mornings in dorms a little easier, I have a few great drink hacks for any other caffeine lovers out there.

My uncle Jeff’s friend and gardening buddy, Miles, taught him the most amazing kale salad recipe. Every time my family visited Uncle Jeff, we looked forward to making and eating this salad. My dad learned the recipe on one of our trips to Jeff’s house, and we’ve been making it for every family dinner and get-together since.

When I heard about the new Potbelly Sandwich Shop near the Standard, I thought I’d give it a try. The location seemed great, and the online menu had an exciting variety of sandwiches to choose from. I was hopeful this would be my new go-to lunch spot.

My roommate, Meghan, makes the best crack. I know the name may be a turnoff, but this dessert’s only addictive property is its sweet, delicious flavor. The first time I heard the name I was a bit thrown off, but I fell in love from the first bite.
