The Organization of African Students hosted Africa Day on Friday, April 16 in the Amphitheater — an annual event that celebrates the many cultures found on the African continent. Last year, Africa Day was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nursing Prof. Virginia LeBaron, former Engineering Prof. John Lach and a team of graduate and undergraduate students implemented Behavioral and Environmental Sensing and Intervention for Cancer to find personalized solutions for cancer pain intervention. BESI-C is a smart health home-monitoring system that aims to reduce cancer pain by detecting it before it arises and helps healthcare workers effectively intervene with the goal of limiting negative patient outcomes.

A team of University students led by Engineering Prof. Mool C. Gupta received awards for Best Technical Poster and Best Technical Demonstration for its innovative project in NASA's 2020 Big Idea Challenge. The project — entitled Beaming of Energy via Lasers for Lunar Exploration — focused on powering devices in dark areas on the moon that receive no sunlight by using lasers to transmit energy to rovers. During the design process, the team had to overcome difficulties associated with working on their project in light of COVID-19 restrictions.

The antidepressant Fluvoxamine shows positive signs as a COVID-19 therapeutic in an update from a Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis research trial sparked by a discovery by a U.Va. neuroscience team. Researchers are investigating the effectiveness of the drug in reducing an inflammatory response by the immune system in response to COVID-19.

Released in September, “LAGGA” represents an in-road to U.K. drill for those who may be unfamiliar with the surprisingly influential style. M1llionz, whose real name is unknown to the Internet, is a rising U.K. drill rapper from Birmingham, England. He has a penchant for fast-paced, patois-laced U.K. drill tunes backed by heavy 808s — and his style is representative of the current global wave of influence returning to the United States.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the research done in the University’s Department of Public Health Sciences, and that of other public health departments, is important in providing analyses and guidance to those making policy decisions. Alongside the department’s mission to “provide excellence and leadership in innovative research, education and community engagement strategies to advance clinical care, patient outcomes and population health,” its research provides important insights on public health initiatives and practices.
