The Batten School hosted a two-day conference Thursday and Friday to celebrate its new permanent home in Garrett Hall. The $12.2 million renovation was completed in August, and the building was honored by President Teresa A. Sullivan and members of the Board of Visitors during the Friday night dinner.

The University joined the Aqueduct Alliance, an association of water experts from the public and private sectors, non-governmental organizations and academia, last week. Newsweek released its rankings of the nation's best colleges last week, placing the University in seven of its 25 categories. The "Newsweek and The Daily Beast College Rankings" was based on data collected by the College Board, the National Center for Education Statistics, the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, the Washington Monthly, the Sustainable Endowment Institute and directly from students.

Hurricane Irene grazed the Charlottesville area this past weekend, causing only minimal damage to the City as it made its way up the East Coast. Irene made landfall early Saturday morning, beginning its destructive path in North Carolina before continuing through Virginia and into New England. By Sunday afternoon, it was estimated that three million people lost power across the Eastern Seaboard - including 1,300 in the Charlottesville area - and that Irene was responsible for at least 18 deaths, four of which occurred in Virginia because of falling trees. By 9 a.m. Sunday, Irene had weakened from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm, but flooding and power outages continued to be a problem as the storm struck New York City.

Del. David Toscano announced last Thursday via Twitter that he will seek another two-year term for the 57th District seat in the Virginia General Assembly. Thus far, Toscano is the only person to announce plans to run for the seat.

The Virginia women's lacrosse team will retire the No. 1, worn by former midfielder Yeardley Love. The athlete died last spring after she was assaulted by her ex-boyfriend, a Cavalier men's lacrosse player.

The University's Teaching Resource Center has partnered with Information Technology and Communication to develop the eTAP, an online tool that allows instructors to collect mid-semester feedback from students. The eTAP, which stands for electronic teaching analysis poll, launches today on UVaCollab and features a standardized method to gather feedback for immediate use.

A new report released last week by Harvard University encourages the United States to better prepare its young adults for making a successful transition to working life by eliminating the "college for all" mentality that pervades much of society today. The findings encourage the nation to promote a "post high-school credential for all" way of thinking that incorporates two-year colleges, community colleges, vocational training programs and apprenticeships.
