College can be a big transition from high school. First semester of first year can seem daunting, but to make this transition easier at the University, the College of Arts and Sciences introduced a series of courses called COLA courses, which stands for College Advising Seminar, that are defined as optional one credit courses — topics chosen by the professor — with about 80 percent of class time devoted to course material and 20 percent devoted to group advising. The usefulness of COLA courses makes a persuasive case for requiring them of all first-year College students.

The most troubling aspect of our democracy today isn’t gerrymandering, outside political spending or partisan gridlock. It is the troubling voting participation rates, at just 58.2 percent of eligible voters in the 2012 presidential election and just 41 percent of eligible voters in the 2010 midterm elections. The best way to transform voting from a relatively infrequently exercised right to a civic duty is to institute mandatory voting for all eligible voters in the United States.

There are two types of jobs in the world: jobs that assign algorithmic tasks and jobs that assign heuristic tasks. Algorithmic tasks require reading instructions or using fairly strict guidelines, which clearly lay out how to complete the task. Heuristic tasks, such as creating apps, do not have specific instructions, but rather require creativity along with trial and error. Both of these types of tasks require different kinds of training and development.

Last week marked the beginning of the class giving campaign for the Class of 2015 — an annual effort to solicit donations to the University from members of the graduating class.
