The Jefferson School of African American Heritage Center announced last Wednesday that it received a grant of $34,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts to help fund a monument to Vinegar Hill. According to a press release, The Jefferson School received the grant from the NEA as part of an effort of the NEA to fund art projects across the country.

Otto Warmbier’s body was received by the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office, but the coroner will not perform an autopsy at the request of his family. However, an external examination of Warmbier’s body was performed.

The Board of Architectural Review approved a proposed mural to be painted on the side of 1515 University Avenue at a meeting Tuesday. James Zehmer, a 2002 graduate of the Architecture School, was the project manager of the 1515 renovation and is helping plan the mural project. He attended the meeting to answer the Board’s questions about the mural.

In the wake of the news of Otto Warmbier’s death, Young Pioneer Tours, the travel company that brought Warmbier to North Korea, announced it would no longer be bringing Americans to North Korea. The company published a statement regarding the matter Tuesday.

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) was in Charlottesville for two events Monday. Kaine first hosted a roundtable event to discuss Medicaid cuts at Albemarle High School. Later, Kaine delivered the keynote address to welcome Mandela Washington Fellows at the Rotunda.

Doctors at University of Cincinnati Medical Center held a press conference Thursday afternoon to discuss University student Otto Warmbier’s condition. The team of doctors described Warmbier to be in a state of “unresponsive wakefulness,” and believe him to have no “conscious awareness” despite earlier reports that he was in a coma upon release.

About 3,500 alumni returned to Charlottesville for Reunions the past two weekends. The classes of 1957, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982 and the Thomas Jefferson Society, made up of alumni who graduated more than 50 years ago, returned for their reunion June 1-4. The classes of 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007 and 2017 had theirs June 8-11. Attendance totaled around 5,200 people, including alumni and their guests.

Ed Gillespie won Virginia’s Republican primary election Tuesday night. Gillespie won 43.7 percent of the vote with 99 percent of precincts reporting, while opponents Corey Stewart and Frank Wagner won 42.5 percent and 13.7 percent, respectively. Gillespie won Charlottesville with 48.1 percent of the vote. He did not win Albemarle, however, which was won by Stewart who had 45.7 percent of the vote with all precincts reporting.

The Building and Grounds Committee of the Board of Visitors met Friday to discuss the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers. The committee reviewed and approved the schematic design for the memorial, which was designed by Boston firm Höweler + Yoon. Meejin Yoon of Höweler + Yoon attended the meeting, along with Mabel Wilson, a University alumna who is also helping to design the memorial.

The Finance Committee of the Board of Visitors met Friday to review the operating budget for the 2017-18 school year. The Board approved the $3.427 billion budget at the meeting.

Jeffrey W. Legro, a politics professor and the vice provost for global affairs at the University, has been named the next provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Richmond. His appointment will begin on July 1.

Five people were arrested on alcohol-related charges this year during the 40th annual Foxfield Races, which took place April 29, in addition to one person being ticketed for possession of marijuana. Two out of the five individuals arrested were University students.

Environmental sciences research asst. professor Arthur Schwarzschild died the morning of March 15 of an apparent heart attack. Schwarzschild graduated from the University with a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences in 2004.

An upcoming town hall with Fifth District Congressman Tom Garrett (R-Va.) scheduled for March 31 is currently set to take place in Garrett Hall, a venue that is part of the University’s Batten School and seats 135 people. After some constituents complained that restricting seating limits who can attend the town hall, the University Democrats responded by tagging Garrett in a Facebook post and offering him a larger venue — the Chemistry Building auditorium.
