It was a familiar situation for the Virginia field hockey team, going 1-1 for the second weekend in a row to start the year. Despite the loss, the No. 5 Cavaliers (2-2, 0-0 ACC) played well in their contests.

The opening weekend of play brought about mixed results for the Cavaliers. On Friday, the team started the season strong with a commanding 5-1 win against Miami University. In the game, No. 5 Virginia (1-1, 0-0 ACC) not only held the Redhawks (1-2, 0-0 MAC) scoreless for over 60 minutes, but they also recorded 26 shots.

The Virginia field hockey team’s 2015 season ended with a disappointing loss against a Duke team the Cavaliers had beaten twice that same year. Despite that, the No. 5 Cavaliers had a strong season highlighted with a No. 3 ranking in the NCAA Tournament and look to continue last year’s success.

The No. 22 Virginia baseball team took down No. 1 Miami in a three-game series this past weekend, winning the first and third games. After a close 6-5 win Friday, the team suffered a 9-2 defeat Saturday before bouncing back Sunday to win, 7-3. The series win followed an 11-5 Cavalier loss against Virginia Commonwealth.

It was another disappointing game for Virginia in a 14-8 loss against Duke Sunday at Klöckner Stadium. After hanging with the Blue Devils for most of the first half, No. 16 Duke (8-6, 2-2 ACC) pulled away in the second.

The Virginia baseball team snapped a two-game losing streak Wednesday with a win over George Washington, 15-3. The Colonials (11-19, 2-1 A-10) were scoreless through seven innings before batting in two runs in the eight and another in the ninth.

Sunday was a familiar scene for coach Dom Starsia and the Virginia lacrosse team, as it defeated rival No. 8 Johns Hopkins in overtime for the third consecutive year. The Cavaliers (4-5, 0-2) won 13-12, in their first victory against a top-20 ranked team all season.

The Virginia lacrosse team left South Bend, Ind., this past weekend suffering its second overtime loss of the season. Despite the loss, playing a top-10 Notre Dame closely was a step in the right direction after a rocky start to the season.
