A number of University students are planning to volunteer this summer for Bike & Build — a national non-profit organization that raises funds and generates awareness for affordable housing. Each volunteer will ride his or her bike 4,000 miles across the country from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, working along the way with local non-profit organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Rebuilding Together.

In an effort to combat the rising number of heroin-related deaths, Governor Terry McAuliffe signed Executive Order 29 last September, establishing the Governor’s Task Force on Prescription Drug and Heroin Abuse. The group was formed to reverse the growing death toll from heroin overdose, which has doubled in the last two years in Virginia.

The City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County saw record high retail sales last year — a combined $2.5 billion — making 2014 the first year to have higher retail sales than pre-recession years. Sales were $142 million higher than retail sales in 2007 — the previous highest grossing year. Retail sales were up in Charlottesville by 9.66 percent from 2013, and were up in Albemarle County by 5.17 percent.

The 29th Annual Outstanding Faculty Award Ceremony, acknowledging excellence in teaching, research and public service, was held Thursday in Richmond. Gov. Terry McAuliffe presented awards to 13 Virginian educators, two of whom were University professors — English Prof. Stephen Cushman and Asst. Biology Prof. Sarah Kucenas.

The University Office of Sustainability held a TED-inspired talk titled “Hoos Talking Green” Friday in connection with the University’s Sustainability Days. The event featured six speakers from the University — Medicine Prof. Matthew Trowbridge, Urban and Environmental Planning Prof. Time Beatley, Computer Science Prof. Kamin Whitehouse, Environmental Science Prof. Deborah Lawrence, Law Prof. Jonathan Cannon and Economics Prof. William Shobe.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe appointed Engineering Prof. James C. McDaniel to the state Aerospace Advisory Council Friday. The Council is tasked with advising the governor and other executive agencies on policy and funding in aerospace economic development, workforce development in the industry and educational programs and curriculum related to aerospace.

Christopher Newport Religion Prof. Graham Schweig gave a lecture in Newcomb Friday titled “Spiritual but Not Religious.” Schweig, who earned a doctorate degree in comparative religion from Harvard, is an author, scholar and yogi. His books, including his translation of the “Bhagavad Gita,” are widely acclaimed.
