After several wonderful films shown around Grounds, this year’s French Film Festival closed with a particularly inspiring, 2011 Academy Award nominated film, “Monsieur Lazhar.” This film depicts the lives of a class of Montreal elementary school students after their teacher commits suicide in the classroom. Bachir Lazhar, an Algerian immigrant, steps in to replace the students’ former teacher, but even he is dealing with crisis. The kids and Lazhar effectively learn from each other as they all work though their emotional challenges. Two of the children, Alice and Simon, both endure a difficult struggle to deal with their former teacher’s death and, as a result, connect with Lazhar on a deep, personal level.

I had a hard time believing Mark Wahlberg had his own reality television show when I discovered “Wahlburgers,” the new show that details the life of the actor, his family and the burger restaurant they own: Walhburgers. Clever though the name may be, the TV show’s entertainment value pretty much stops there. While the allure of Mark Wahlberg may attract his fans, the show fell far short of my high expectations.

Maury Hall was no more. After purchasing my ticket and walking into the crowded room, I was pleased to see Shakespeare On The Lawn had, for the evening, turned the the lecture space into their own personal theater. There, I would be swept up in fourth-year College student Robbie Richards’ production of “‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore” — a show I previously knew nothing about except for the few promotions I had seen around Grounds.

Though sexual humor can easily relegate literary works to the low-brow fringes, Russian author Vladimir Nabokov was a master at using sexual comedy to criticize conceptions of intimacy. His works have both challenged and entertained many for decades, and earned widespread popularity across the decades. Nabokov consistently brings taboo topics out into the open and pokes fun at them.

Katy Perry’s latest album, “Prism”, is another solid addition to the pop music canon. In short, the record does everything a pop album should do; it makes you want to dance, it’s fun and it’s a collection of top-notch anthems, with a few power ballads sprinkled in for good measure.

Juicy J has enjoyed quite a surge in popularity this year. His aptly named banger “Bandz A Make Her Dance” made its way into dance clubs across the world, and the success led to features on tracks by a slew of popular artists: will.i.am, Miley Cyrus, Ke$ha, Rihanna and Lil Wayne. He’s been a consistent presence on the charts this year, leading up to the release of his latest studio album “Stay Trippy,” which hit stores earlier this month.

Still looking for that all-star movie to fulfill your action packed, superhero desires this spring? Well, the latest installment of the G.I. Joe franchise probably won’t fit the bill. ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ is non-stop action — but not necessarily in a good way.

Some of the highest grossing movies of all time are animated features. Movies like Finding Nemo, The Lion King and the Toy Story and Shrek franchises all struck gold upon release, and other top grossers like Avatar, The Lord of The Rings series and Alice in Wonderland (2010) each rely on their fair share of animated elements as well.

On Feb. 23, the University’s Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of John D’earth, presented a wonderful and engaging selection of music at their concert entitled “Play on Words.” The show, which centered around the many ways music and words could interact with each other, successfully combined performances of poetry, prose and song into various jazz compositions, including pieces by Thad Jones, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and even D’earth, the director.
