Dancing in the Songbyrd Music House, I was showered by the radiant sound of my favorite band, Winter, and the melodious shoegaze prods of the headlining band, Taniukuchan — in the midst of finals week last spring. All of the stress that had been consuming my mind and body was lifted in an instant — the warmth and ambiance felt like a nice long hug holding me together. It’s official — Virginia State University will set the stage for the second general presidential debate in 2024. This choice sets a new precedent for political history at large. Never before has a Historically Black College or University hosted such an event — past debates have been held at a variety of predominantly white universities, and some have been held at conference halls. We should applaud the Commission on Presidential Debates for taking this first step toward adequate representation of HBCUs. Nevertheless, this is a largely symbolic step that begets a thousand more actionable ones from the candidates that will be present on that debate stage.

On the contrary, I’m left with more questions than ever before. Even though I've arrived so far and done so much more than I could have ever imagined, I cannot come to convince myself that I know how to do tasks. And maybe that’s okay.
