New Cabell renovations complete

After four years of construction, the renovations to New Cabell Hall are nearing completion as students and departments file into the six-story building at the start of the semester. The $64.5 million renovation added state-of-the-art equipment and updated many of the building’s systems.

Largest class yet joins student body

The Class of 2018 officially joined the University community with Sunday’s convocation ceremony, during which a record 3,690 first years were welcomed to Grounds. The incoming class is not only large, but also diverse, according to the Office of Admissions, with new students displaying a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.

Perpetrator arrested in Corner stabbing

Robert Sherwood Shrieves, 58, has been charged with felonious assault in Tuesday’s stabbing of a Charlottesville man on the Corner. Officers responded to the 100 block of 14th street shortly after 3 p.m.

Major Rotunda renovations underway

The massive restoration project for Thomas Jefferson’s historic Rotunda continues as students and professors return for the fall semester. The beloved University landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site has been fenced off since the conclusion of Final Exercises in May, making way for heavy duty construction equipment and teams of workers.

Everything you need to know about the new bike share

The University announced the launch of a new bike share program called UBike this summer — a program which aims to give members of the University community an inexpensive, efficient and environmentally friendly transportation option for traveling around Grounds. The program is set to go live within the first two months of school.

July 1 passes, faculty pay increase delayed

President Teresa Sullivan recently wrote to the entire University community concerning several cuts in the Virginia appropriation for the University. The final state budget adds $8.2 million less than planned to the University’s budget.

Wynn, Sullivan, others request same-sex partner benefits

Recent University alum Brendan Wynn, along with 75 other students, faculty and administrators, issued a letter Tuesday to Attorney General Mark Herring, encouraging the Commonwealth to extend same-sex partner benefits to public employees in Virginia. Virginia law currently does not permit state-provided health insurance benefits for same-sex domestic partners.


	Board member John Griffin (above), will chair a newly created subcommittee to focus on affordable excellence. Griffin sponsored a $4 million challenge grant earlier this year to raise money for AccessUVa.

Board creates new affordable excellence subcommittee

The Board of Visitors announced Thursday the convening of a new subcommittee to strengthen and sustain the University’s commitment to affordable excellence, according to a University press release. The subcommittee, which falls under the Board’s finance committee, will weigh in on issues surrounding tuition, financial aid and the annual budget.

Year in Review: 2013-2014

The defining events of the 2013-14 year include widespread response to changes to AccessUVa, a seemingly endless search for new deans, the passage of the University’s Cornerstone plan and heightened administrative intervention in University fraternities’ new member education — or “pledging” — processes.
