Crime panel supports overturning 21-day rule

The Virginia State Crime Commission met Wednesday in Richmond and gave their endorsement to a proposed bill that, if passed, would allow convicted offenders an unlimited amount of time to introduce new evidence of their innocence, potentially even years after sentencing. As it stands now, Virginia's 21-day rule denies judges the ability to consider these claims of innocence if they are made over three weeks after a defendant's sentencing hearing.

Expansion will improve graduation rate

The Atlantic Coast Conference's recent decision to expand to include the University of Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College, not only will increase the conference's football prowess but also will increase the graduation rate of student athletes. According to a study released this past Monday by the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida, the expansion of the ACC will increase the average graduation rate of football players by 1 percent.

Community prepares as Isabel creeps toward coast

As hurricane Isabel continues to churn northward toward central Virginia, members of both the University and Charlottesville community continue emergency preparations in anticipation of its landfall. Although the strength and direction of the hurricane could change significantly in the next two days, both University and local officials urge Charlottesville residents to take precautionary measures such as stocking up on food and water, "buttoning up" their residences and securing outdoor furniture and other items which could cause damage with the expected high winds and heavy rain. "Be prepared, but calm," Director of Facilities Operations Chris Willis said.
