Fourth-year College student and women’s lacrosse player Caroline Seats joined Boston College women’s lacrosse players Covie Stanwick and Molly Erdle this December in Yards for Yeardley — a project in which teams pledge to run one million yards in one month. The project has quickly expanded to include women’s and men’s teams at colleges and high schools across the country.

English is my dad’s second language, so throughout Fall Break he would see reports on ESPN about Jameis Winston, but he didn’t know what they were about. He asked me what Winston had done this time and wondered whether he was going to be suspended. I wondered the same thing, but of all the “Developing Stories” and red-highlighted text on Sportscenter, nothing mentioned a suspension of the Florida State quarterback. The school is investigating an alleged sexual assault in 2012 and more recent news that Winston had signed autographs for money.

The appeal of former University student George Huguely V, who was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love in May 2012, also a University student at the time, went before the Virginia Supreme Court this week. The Court received the initial petition in April and the court record in June. A hearing was scheduled this week to determine whether the Court would hear the appeal.

Former University lacrosse player George W. Huguely V, who was convicted in 2012 of killing his ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love, also a former University lacrosse player, appealed his second-degree murder conviction to the Virginia Supreme Court Monday, according to NBC 29. Huguely was denied a rehearing of his appeal Saturday after a Virginia Court of Appeals affirmed his conviction in early March.

Lawyers representing former University student and convicted murderer George Huguely faced a three judge appeal panel in Richmond earlier this month. The Virginia Court of Appeals ruled last week to allow for a broadening of the appeal made in the trial of former Virginia lacrosse player George Huguely. A document released by the Court stated that the circuit court violated Huguely’s right to a fair trial by refusing to allow the defense to ask certain questions during jury selection which were relevant to whether jurors would remain impartial.

In the three years I’ve written for The Cavalier Daily, this is the first time I’ve ever penned something in the first person, or something containing my own opinion. Though not shy, I’m often a private person who does not publicize my internal thoughts or share my perspective. Working for our news staff was the perfect job for me because I enjoyed managing the paper’s most difficult section, but I didn’t feel compelled to push across my opinion to our readership, attend any sporting events or entertain anyone.

The University’s use of live cats to train graduate physicians on how to insert breathing tubes into critically ill newborns has drawn ire from animal-rights groups around the country. Dozens, including former Charlottesville mayor Dave Norris and a man in a full-body cat suit, demonstrated in front of the Rotunda last April, and former “The Price is Right” host Bob Barker, who gave the University $1 million in 2009 to establish an animal law program, penned a letter to University President Teresa Sullivan protesting the training technique. But the Medical Center last week quietly abandoned the practice.
