A few days ago, “Cocaine Piñata” — the collaborative effort by beat-auteur Madlib (also known as Otis Jackson, Jr.) and hard-boiled gangsta rapper Freddie Gibbs — was finally released, and, in my opinion, marks one of the best hip-hop records in a very long time. “Piñata” is unrivaled in its sheer production value and is honed down to a sharp sonic edge which doesn’t pull punches on a single track.
Everyone has a musical weakness. For some, it’s a certain song or band. For others, it’s the timbre of a particular instrument, the idiosyncratic tone of an individual singer’s voice, or something as simple as a specific chord structure. My weakness is the sound of drums.
Ladies and gentlemen of U.Va, your voice of reason has arrived. Fashion reason, that is. I’m the Fashion Jiminy Cricket you never knew you needed. I’m a normal person with an eye for the aesthetics of fashion. And the first item on my docket is the fashion degeneracy that are pajamas in public.
Throughout the past year, a dude by the name of Young Thug has been creeping his way into the limelight, and it’s pretty hard to figure out why. He wears skinny jeans and has tattoos covering his lanky frame. His rapping style falls somewhere between yelping and Auto-tuned burbles, and his lyrics are laced with bizarre personal revelations.
If there’s one word to describe this Man Candy Monday selection, it’s definitely…honest. Singer-songwriter Noah Gundersen leaves his emotions and thoughts out in the open with his frank, heartfelt, and illuminating lyrics. He won over my heart with his bold and candid lyrics in ““Jesus, Jesus”:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_ztTzvqcZg” asking, “Jesus, Jesus, if you’re up there won’t you hear me /‘Cause I’ve been wondering if you’ve been listening for quite a while.” His fearlessness in writing songs that deal with everything from politics to religion is noteworthy and admirable.
I recently happened upon on an internet page entitled “Lists of music genres.” It included, of course, “rock,” “pop” and “country,” but as I progressed deeper and deeper into this list of all lists, I began to pick out smaller, more obscure types.
During my senior year of high school, I spent a substantial amount of time listening to West African traditional drum music. I am not talking about the type of “African music” you pick up in the World music section of Best Buy. It’s not the “African music” that Shakira recorded for the 2010 FIFA World Cup or even the “African music” played by white, dreadlocked “Deadheads” in the U.S. It’s probably not even the music that Africans listen to on a daily basis.
Welcome to Man Crush Mondays, where I evaluate prominent members of the less fair sex on attractiveness, talent and overall desirability.
Hello all and welcome to the re-vamped On the Cavwalk blog! This blog will cover everything from runway couture to styles borrowed from the streets; from the biggest events in the center of New York City’s Garment District to the local happenings at the University of Virginia.
The Cavalier Daily is the only daily news organization at the University of Virginia and the oldest newspaper in Charlottesville. It is an entirely student-run, non-profit organization with an operating budget that it accrues solely through selling advertisements. The Cavalier Daily maintains a 10,000 twice-a-week print circulation, publishes a daily online edition with expanded and enhanced content, and publishes a daily e-newsletter. In addition, it has recently developed a mobile application for smartphones.
Yesterday, the University of Virginia Club Field Hockey team hosted the University of North Carolina and the University of Maryland yesterday at our very own Carr’s Hill Field. The Virginia field hockey team (8-2-1) is currently ranked 10th in the nation, with the outcome of this tournament potential being a measure of the team’s national title aspirations.
Mike London was disappointed after the game, calling the 48-27 loss “embarassing.” Here’s him in his own words, on the loss and the team’s penalties.
The Virginia Fencing Club hosted their inaugural tournament this weekend at Memorial Gymnasium. The tournament featured Fencers from George Washington University, the University of Mary Washington, and Liberty University.
Dear Readers, This is another section of my blog where I’ll discuss my reactions to books, entitled “Corvus Rettulit”. Of course, you can always leave recommendations and suggestions for other awesome books by emailing me at scb4t@virginia.edu. Anyways, here is my first book review of Dennis Lehane’s Shutter Island.
Dear Reader, “ As I mentioned earlier, I am a film lover. The one genre that shall always hold a special place in my heart has to be horror. This is one type of review blog that I call “The Cinephile.” Feel free to recommend any further films, that you would like me to review. You may either email me at scb4t@virginia.edu or message me on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/Corbin007). Now, without further ado, here is my first review for “The Cinephile.”
Hello Readers, Some of you may not know me very well, so allow me to introduce myself. My name is Corbin Bond, and yes I realize my last name matches that of a famous British agent. Here’s another fun fact, my first name comes from the Latin term “Corvus,” which means raven, hence my obsession with Poe and the word “nevermore.” Trust me that will explain a lot in the future. Anyways, I’m just your average student. That is if you like to use surface level analysis to truly understand people. In actuality, I like to consider myself many things other than average. In fact, once you get to know me, you might realize that I tend to find being “average,” or “normal,” to be vastly overrated. Now that that ice is broken, let me just say that one of my main goals is to converse with all of you over a few interests that you and I might share. First of all, I am a complete movie and book addict. I like escaping either into the celluloid of cinematic art or between the lines of a great work of literature. Furthermore, I love talking with people about them and sharing my reactions. Meanwhile, besides the books and films, I love to travel and find retreats all over the world. With so many people and wonders in the world, I cannot successfully deny myself from seeing them and telling everyone I meet all about these adventures. In addition, there are times where I definitely feel a necessity to speak my mind about specific happenings in the world. From the media and popular culture to random factoids about daily life, I have no hesitation with giving my honest opinion about things I witness in life. Finally, as I said earlier, I want to talk with you. I want to answer whatever questions you may have for me, and I would love to give whatever advice I can to help you. Here is where the fun begins. Not only do I want to converse with you, but I want to hear from you as well. You may want to read my reaction to a specific book or film. Then feel free let me know. If you know of a location that you think I should visit and experience, then by all means tell me so. Furthermore, if you want to discuss something going on in the world or in daily life, then I would love to hear your thoughts. Finally, if you have any questions, I have no problem with providing you with my best possible answers. Essentially, I want to show you how trying to be “normal,” or “average,” is nothing compared to being yourself, no matter how strange or different you are considered by others. Therefore, I am rebelling against the norms to be my full self with all of you. I may not be perfect or the best person. However, I give you my word – “The Word of Bond” – that you will get nothing but the honest opinions and words of a strange, unusual, different, and abnormal individual. In short, I want you to get to know me for me.
