Junior guard Taine Murray is a hard worker, someone who weathered protracted bouts of severely limited playing time. He is an emblem of an old generation of college basketball, the rare player who put his nose to the grindstone instead of putting his name in the transfer portal. He is, finally, a rotation player.

After a tumultuous Midlands Invitational that saw the team riddled with sickness, injuries and other unforeseen circumstances, Virginia wrestling returned Saturday at the Arms Duals in Richmond. The Cavaliers (4-1, 0-0 ACC) were pitted head-to-head against Gardner-Webb (2-3, 0-0 Big South) and George Mason (8-4, 1-1 Atlantic 10), and with momentum at a low after the unluckiest tournament Virginia has had all year, the team needed wins to regain momentum.

The Golden Globe Awards kicked off the Hollywood awards season Sunday night with the first major event since the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. The strikes — which shut the film and television industries down from May to early November 2023 — were meant to gain better working conditions and fair wages for actors, writers and other union members. Much of the world was excited to see stars walking the red carpet on the heels of these successful strikes.

Virginia women’s basketball returned to John Paul Jones Arena Sunday in hopes of breaking its losing streak in a win against Duke. Unfortunately, the Cavaliers (8-6, 0-3 ACC) fell behind early in the game and struggled to pull ahead, allowing the Blue Devils (10-5, 2-2 ACC) to win 60-56.

Last semester, the Honor Committee found a student guilty of using ChatGPT on an assignment. This is the first time a student has received an infraction for artificial intelligence use. Of course, Honor infractions are not cause for celebration. However, this case demonstrates the laudable steps our community is taking to deal with AI. While the University’s AI policy must continue to adapt to new developments, the Committee and University administration alike have, so far, proven that they are up to the challenges set by ChatGPT and other AI platforms. This success has in large part been thanks to their unwillingness to use a strict rubric in handling AI related infractions — a decision that allows the Committee to tailor its responses to the various ways students can use AI. It is time other universities follow our lead and avoid developing rigid rules on handling AI.

After a close first half, Virginia fell well behind NC State (11-3, 3-0 ACC) in the opening minutes of the second half Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers (11-4, 2-2 ACC) suffered from poor bench play, shooting 3-15 in the contest compared to the Wolfpack’s bench shooting 9-14. Saturday’s result is Virginia’s fourth loss of the season, all of which have been by double digits.

Virginia women’s basketball traveled to Atlanta, Ga. to take on Georgia Tech at McCamish Pavilion Thursday night. The Cavaliers (8-5, 0-2 ACC) were coming off of a Sunday defeat to No. 3 NC State in which they led at halftime, while the Yellow Jackets (10-4, 1-1) had their four-game win streak snapped Dec. 29 in a loss in their conference opener against Florida State. With both teams hungry to get back to winning ways, the game came down to the last shot and was largely a back and forth affair, but Virginia ultimately lost the game 63-60.

Coming off of a devastating loss against a struggling Notre Dame squad, Virginia (11-3, 2-1 ACC) recovered hope for this season and their young team in Wednesday’s matchup against the Cardinals (5-8, 0-2 ACC).

One Friday this past semester, Charlottesville High School classes were canceled for the day. The reason for this break was not a national holiday, nor a rather early and fortuitous snow day. Instead, the teachers, who have dedicated their lives to educating the future generation, did not feel comfortable showing up to school. Since the pandemic, and particularly this school year, there has been a rise in rule-breaking and violence among students at CHS. It was this trend of violence and a lack of support in addressing behavioral issues which prompted the superintendent to close the high school which constitutes an unprecedented step. When a rising lack of discipline in CHS becomes so evident, many see a form of stricter punishment as necessary to inculcate discipline back into the minds of students.

After a long break for finals, Virginia wrestling closed out 2023 at the Midlands Championships in Hoffman Estates, Ill. Friday and Saturday. The event, which featured wrestlers from over 30 Division I wrestling programs, had a ton of talent in every weight group and was a true test of the Cavaliers’ (3-0, 0-0 ACC) strength.

The Cavaliers have had a strange season so far. While they boast a seemingly solid 10-3 record, those losses have looked uncharacteristically ugly. Notre Dame drubbed Virginia 76-54 Saturday, throttling the Cavaliers instantly to deliver a shocking result. The loss altered Virginia’s outlook. A 77-54 loss two weeks ago to then-No. 23 Memphis, viewed by many as hopefully only an outlier, now seems more like a prelude.

Nothing fell for Virginia Saturday afternoon at Joyce Center in South Bend, Ind. The Cavaliers (10-3, 1-1 ACC) went down double digits in the opening minutes and never took the lead from Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish (6-7, 1-1 ACC) shot an incredible 69.6 percent from the field in the first half, enough to keep Virginia out of reach.

Studying abroad is your chance to apply years spent learning a language — or working all the way up to level two on Duolingo — to real life. U.Va. has always been proud of its renowned study abroad programs. U.Va.’s International Studies Office crafts these programs to immerse students in some of the most diverse environments of their lives — surrounded by a group of like-minded U.Va. students at all times. ISO emphasizes that participants will meet people from all walks of life and have the opportunity to interact with them in another language, and that students will instead, of course, choose to speak English with the group of peers on their flight. ISO advertises that it will offer you the chance to immerse yourself in another culture — and students will ponder this fact as they hide away in a foreign Starbucks watching YouTube.

This morning, I had the opportunity to meet with Congressional reporter Fay Knews. During our meeting, Knews let me know about the wave of compulsory background checks issued to representatives after George Santos was expelled for putting the “con” in Congress. Knews admitted that she was surprised that background checks had been compulsory for years. The problem had just been that no one bothered to read 435 sets of paperwork, much less muster the courage to ask for President Trump's tax returns. As the documents have been misplaced, representatives are being forced to complete what is dubbed by the media as “post-background checks” once again. Unfortunately, such a task is demanding politicians to do the unthinkable — tell the truth.

After a pair of games, Virginia bounced back by leading Morgan State wire-to-wire in a 77-44 victory. Senior guard Reece Beekman led the Cavaliers (10-2, 1-0 ACC) with 17 points and seven assists, while sophomore guard Ryan Dunn chipped in with a spectacular two-way performance, notching eight points, 10 rebounds and a pair of steals. Virginia held the Bears (4-11, 0-0 MEAC) to their lowest offensive output since a 2018 matchup with the Cavaliers.
