Female student assaulted while studying in library

A female first-year student reported being grabbed by an unknown, student-aged male on the fifth floor of Alderman Library stacks Monday night at about 9 p.m., University police said yesterday.

"A white male grabbed the victim around her waist," University Police Sgt. Thomas Durrer said. "She kicked him in the leg and pushed him back, then left the library right away."

The victim was not hurt in the incident.

According to police, the victim did not recognize the perpetrator.

The assailant was reported as a 6'0" white male in his late teens or early 20s, with brown hair and weighing 200 lbs.

Police said he was wearing a gray T-shirt with "Onehelluva" in black letters and cut-off jean shorts at the time of the incident.

According to the police report, the victim initially did not contact police and instead first reported the incident to her resident assistant.

The victim contacted police yesterday afternoon via their non-emergency phone number but declined to file a written report until after she had finished her classes.

"The victim had a lot of things to do and didn't contact us for a day," Durrer said.

According to Alderman Library Night Supervisor Jennifer Sorensen, no officials working Monday night saw anything suspicious.

"I didn't see any commotion or anything suspicious," Sorensen said.

"There were a number of other people at the front desks who didn't see anything either," she said.

Police are classifying the incident as simple assault, a Class I misdemeanor.

According to Durrer, police are regularly patrolling Alderman Library as they investigate.

"University Police are very concerned anytime something like this occurs," he said. "We always take investigations very seriously and we're here to protect the students."
