Cash cut-off
Some professors might be finding advising less materially profitable this year.
According to an Inside UVA Online press release, College Dean Melvyn P. Leffler has ended the practice of paying professors for first-year advising. The move is part of a larger restructuring project designed to propel the University into the top 10 institutions of higher learning by 2020.
In the past, the University paid $300 to advisors of first years. The end of this practice will produce a $45,000 surplus, which will fund faculty travel and summer research.
English Prof. John Sullivan advises first years and majors in English and American Studies.
"I don't see any reason why we need to be paid to do something that ought to be part of our job," Sullivan said.
Students take note: An additional $10,000 will be set aside for advisors "who wish to take their advisees to a play or a movie or a concert, or who wish to invite them home for dinner," Leffler said in the press release.
