Virginia or Marquette: basketball recruit Terry Sanders just could not decide. But ultimately, Sanders, a Milwaukee native, simply could not resist the allure of playing at home, impelling the 6-foot-8 power forward to give his hometown Golden Eagles a verbal commitment.
"Terry loved Virginia," said Kevin Keatts, Sanders' coach at Hargrave Military Academy. "He loved everything about it, but he also had those same feelings about Marquette and that's home. He struggled with the decision, but he wanted to get back home."
As late as last week, the Cavaliers appeared to have the inside track on landing Sanders, a consensus Top 50 prospect. In fact, Keatts asserted just five days ago that Sanders favored Virginia.
"He was close to committing to Virginia and at one point, he was leaning toward them," Keatts said. "But the biggest factor was Marquette's home appeal."
With Sanders out of the picture, Pete Gillen's staff now directs its attention toward Rice High's Kyle Cuffe, a 6-foot-9 power forward who visited Grounds last weekend. Brick Oettinger of Prep Stars Recruiting Handbookstressed that the Cavs must seek out a true center.
"There are plenty of power forwards in the program now, so that's not a real issue," Oettinger said. "Cuffe is big enough to eventually play center. He plays inside and he really attacks the boards."
