Police explore link between robberies

Bullet shells from last week's attempted armed robberies at a local 7-11 store and Arby's restaurant are being tested to see if there is a possible connection between the crimes, Albemarle County Police said.

Although Detective Bill Giles said he does not necessarily believe the two crimes are related, the bullet shells will be "compared just to make sure."

Results of the testing will not be known for several weeks, Giles said.

It also is unknown if there is a connection between these crimes and an armed robbery that took place last week at a local video store by a man wearing a Halloween mask.

"When you have this many robberies that close together in time, you're always looking for similarities," Albemarle County Police Sgt. Howard Porter said.

Albemarle County Police said they have obtained video footage of the incident from a surveillance camera in the 7-11 store.

One of two men in the video was seen wearing a mask, Giles said.

But despite the video evidence, police said there still are no suspects.

"We are at a dead end," Giles said.

The attempted robbery at the 7-11 happened Oct. 26 at 1:23 a.m. when two white males entered the store, one carrying a handgun, Porter said.

The suspects demanded money from the store clerk. But the clerk replied, "That gun's not real" and threw a cup containing a beverage at them, he said.

The armed man fired one shot which went past the clerk and hit the glass door of a drink cooler, he added.

The men then fled the store on foot toward Route 29.

In the Arby's robbery, a victim was shot and wounded after having a wallet stolen. The only available description of the perpetrator was that he was a male.

The string of violent crime also has made its way on Grounds. A male University student was robbed by two men at gunpoint Sunday outside Courtenay dormitory. Police described the two assailants as black males between 5'9" and 6' tall, weighing between 165 and 170 pounds.
