Scott snares another volleyball accolade

Mary Frances Scott's Virginia volleyball career may be winding down, but the fourth-year setter keeps piling up the awards.

Scott earned Co-ACC Volleyball Player of the Week accolades for her play last week, her second such honor this season. She dished out 176 assists in leading the Cavs (17-10, 9-7 ACC) to wins against N.C. State and James Madison and a loss to No. 25 North Carolina.

Scott already holds the Virginia career assists record and moved into second place on the ACC list by boosting her total to 5,877 this past week. Scott stands 16th in NCAA Division I-A history. Andrea Nachtrieb set the Conference record at 6,102 during her time at Georgia Tech (1993-96).

Splashing around in World Cup

Six current members and two alumni of the Virginia swimming and diving teams are competing in the 1999 FINA World Cup in College Park, Md.

Second-year Ed Moses, fourth-years Austin Ramirez and Doak Finch, third-year Jamie Grimes and first-years Cara Lane and Mirjana Bosevska are participating in the competition, which began yesterday and concludes today.

The No. 11 Cavalier women (2-0, 1-0 ACC) may not need Lane and Bosevska when they host James Madison tomorrow at 6 p.m. at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The men's squad (2-1, 0-1) ranks ninth in the nation.

Alumni Jason Webb ('98) and Melanie Valerio ('91) are also competing in the World Cup.
