Council decides to restructure Elections Committee

At Student Council's Tuesday night meeting, Council members established new guidelines for the structure of the Election Committee and a calendar for spring elections.

In the past, the Elections Committee consisted of one chairperson and one vice chairperson.

However, members voted to establish two co-chair positions and four vice-chair positions for the upcoming election. Each of the vice chairs will have a specific concentration with regards to the election: publicity, technology, logistics and tenor.

The tenor vice chair would try to ensure proper decorum during the election, including preventing overly negative campaign tactics.

Council President Taz Turner said the alteration to the Committee structure will "help ensure a smooth transition into the coming year and eliminate inconsistencies caused by transitions."

Elections Co-chairwoman Nancy Peterson said these changes will be effective in "allocating work more efficiently."

Brock T. Jolly, Council vice president for administration, said he believes this new structure will be useful because it will "distribute responsibility" and allow Council to better "address complaints about the elections."

Jolly said giving each person one specific area will provide for greater attention to detail.

Council members also established a finalized spring 2000 elections calendar.

Several key alterations were made in the Council election schedule calendar.

One major change in the calendar concerned expenditure reports.

Expenditure reports now will be turned in the night before the polls close, not at a later date, as was common procedure in the past.

Turner said this change will "make the process more efficient by allowing the election results to be announced when the polls close and not be delayed" as they were in previous elections.

Another addition to the election calendar is the informational meeting for prospective candidates, which will occur a few days before the candidate interest meeting.

At the informational meeting, current Council members will address prospective candidates and describe the nature and responsibilities of their positions to provide the prospective candidates with a full understanding of what each position entails.

Included in the election plans are steps to continue to increase student participation.

Measures taken during the last elections to increase participation, including stationing voting booths across Grounds and holding debates, will not change.
