Sisson forms committee for dean search

The Office of the Dean of Students is forming a search committee this week to replace Asst. Dean of Students Michelle Samuels, who announced last month she will leave the University at the end of the semester.

Assoc. Dean of Students V. Shamim Sisson heads the committee, which will be composed of eight to 10 members.

Sisson said she now is issuing invitations to students, faculty, administrators and staff who she thinks should be on the search committee.

She said she expects the committee to be formed in a week to 10 days.

The assistant dean position - which is advertised nationally - has "as its primary focus student leadership development," she added.

Sisson said she is looking for someone to continue Dean Samuels' work of acting as a liaison to volunteer service organizations and projects.

Asst. Dean of Students Pablo Davis said one of Samuels' legacies will be her work in aiding undergraduate students who also are parents.

Sisson said another one of her accomplishments is her contribution to "Grounds for Discussion," the orientation program that helps first-year students acclimate to University life.

Samuels is particularly valuable to the University because of her experience as both an undergraduate and graduate student here, Davis said

"She has brought to her work ... an intimate understanding of what it means to be a U.Va. student," he said.

Sisson said Samuels is leaving because she wants to be closer to her home in New Jersey and to expand her work experience.

The application process for the position includes submitting an application letter, a resumé, three reference letters and a one-page essay about student leadership development as an element of curricular learning. An on-Grounds interview process will take place during the last two weeks of April.

Sisson said the committee will review applications between March 15 and April 15, and she expects to have a replacement by July 1.

Samuels could not be reached for comment.
