After 10 years, Robert E. Scott is leaving the position of dean of the School of Law on July 1, 2001.
"It's been 10 years, I've done all that I wanted to - and it's a good transition time," Scott said.
During his last year as dean, Scott will oversee the completion of the Student-Faculty Center at the Law School and the end of its capital campaign, and will lead the celebration of its 175th anniversary.
University Vice President and Provost Peter W. Low said Scott made many contributions to the University.
"We are a top 10 law school and the quality of the Law School is higher than when [Scott] started" his term as its dean, Low said.
Scott said he is returning to teaching after a sabbatical because he loves it and was not able to be as involved in teaching and research as he would have liked while serving as dean.

"My long-term objective was and is to move the Law School to be as pre-eminent a legal education as possible," Scott said. "I felt it was important to enhance the private resources available to the Law School."
In this effort, Scott led the Law School's capital campaign, which began in 1992 with a goal of raising $50 million in private donations. The goal was raised each time donations surpassed expectations. Now the effort has raised over $140 million.
"I wanted to expand and enhance the student and academic community, and these last 10 years have been an extraordinarily rewarding and happy time for me," Scott said.
University President John T. Casteen III said Scott deserves credit for building a previously strong alumni backing into a "model of excellence."
Low said Scott was a respected teacher and worked well with students as dean.
"He was a terrific dean. He made the faculty and student body very strong," Low said. "He is a very student-friendly dean and was a very good teacher that students like and respect."
Casteen agreed that Scott helped improve conditions for faculty and students.
Low said that a formal nationwide search for Scott's replacement will begin in the fall. He noted that out of the seven law school deans whom he has worked with, only two have come from outside the University law faculty.
