'Lil Hoo' Who?

Inebriated or not, you couldn't help but notice a large, inflatable likeness of the University mascot, the Cavalier bouncing around the football game Saturday.

According to third-year Engineering student (a.k.a. "Superfan") Patrick Kelly, the inflatable Cavalier, 'Lil Hoo,' was ordered by the University.

The University originally got the idea from the University of Nebraska.

Nebraska brought its mascot 'lil Red' to the University when we hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA women's basketball tournament earlier this year.

Once the University noticed the larger-than-life bouncing boy, it had to get a Cavalier likeness for University football games, Kelly said.

Kelly said the University's 'Lil Hoo' was a hit with small children.

'Lil Hoo' is now a unique, quirky addition to the University football experience.

Labor Day Labor

When first-year and transfer students arrive at the University, they are often shocked when they learn they have to attend class on Labor Day.

Because school is in session, all employees of the University also work. But Labor Day is a holiday all other state workers get to take advantage of.

"Nowhere I've been has had workers working to such an extent on Labor Day," said second-year Engineering student Chris Nadino, who recently transferred to the University from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

According to Nadino, employees at VCU are not required to work on Labor Day.

"There is a fair amount of labor injustice going on in the name of U.Va.," he said.

In response to this perceived injustice, Nadino plans to organize a protest to "raise awareness among the students."

While Nadino admits final arrangements for the protest are "up in the air," he hopes to organize a demonstration near Big White Tent outside Newcomb Hall at noon today.

Although University employees have to stick it out on Labor Day, they do get a compensatory day off for the time they spend working on Labor Day, according to the University department of Human Relations.

They can take their day off any time over the next 12 months.
