Student Council moved one step closer to providing more office and performance space for student groups by asking William W. Harmon, vice president for student affairs, to hire an architect to design a new student activities building.
Council passed a resolution Tuesday requesting that Harmon and the administration work to complete the proposed SAB and hire an architect.
Council sent the resolution to Harmon Wednesday but he has not responded yet.
Council President Joe Bilby said he believes Harmon will be receptive to the request.
"I hope that we can persuade Mr. Harmon to bring in an architect in the very near future," Bilby said.
Harmon could not be reached for comment.
University Architect Samuel "Pete" Anderson said a consultation with an architect would take about a year to a year and a half.
After plans and blueprints are drawn, the proposal would be taken to the Board of Visitors and the State Architecture Review Board, Anderson said.
He said large building projects usually take about three to four years to complete - from planning stages to the final touches of construction.
Council has been working to make the dream of a new SAB a reality since spring 1999, when it passed a resolution calling for a planning committee for the new building.
Council originally requested that Harmon hire an architect in July, but he said he wanted to see more gathering of student opinion before moving forward with the project. Two weeks ago Council held a forum to air student views on the SAB.
Some suggestions for the new building included more office space for organizations and more rehearsal and performance space for student arts groups.
The SAB will have four major components - performance space, social space, student office space and basic student services like the Bursar and Registrar's Office, Bilby said.
