Frisbees and polar bears ... Oh My!

The University officially has seen it all. Yesterday, a polar bear joined the unique assortment of streakers, sun-bathers and Frisbee-chasing dogs that frequent the Academical Village.

Students strolling by Lawn tables were greeted by I.C. Polar, also known as Armand Alacbay, from the Charlottesville Ice Park.

Alacbay, an economics and English major who graduated from the University in January, sported a white furry costume and 15-pound head piece as part of his job at the Charlottesville Ice Park, where he has worked since last semester.

"I just wanted to get myself to ice skate a little more," said Alacbay, who has been skating and playing ice hockey recreationally for the past three years. He said he helps the ice park advertise and works at childrens' birthday parties.

As he helped Second-Year Council advertise its free iceskating promotion for last night, Alacbay lounged on the cement, staving off fur-induced heat exhaustion.

"It's like 83 degrees in here!" Alacbay exclaimed through I.C. Polar's mouth vent.

Spoken like a true polar bear.
