Women's lacrosse gears up for George Mason

The Virginia women's lacrosse team has seen anything but smooth sailing so far this season, losing three conference matches and battling sluggish starts as its stands 8-5 overall and 0-3 in the ACC thus far.

But the waters seem calm, at least for the time being. The No. 8 Cavaliers face No. 16 George Mason this afternoon.

Virginia is riding the wave of a 19-4 victory against Virginia Tech on Friday, with junior midfielder Molly Cangemi's five goals leading a productive Cavalier offense.

Cangemi was an all-around star against Tech with two caused turnovers, three draw controls, two ground balls and one assist.

Adding to Virginia's performance was senior Mills Hook, who became only the 10th Virginia player ever to score 100 goals in her collegiate career. Hook scored her record-setting goal well into the second half and put the Cavaliers up, 16-3.

Although the Hokies scored the first goal of the game, the Cavaliers immediately reacted with three goals: the first came from sophomore Lauren Aumiller, the second was Cangemi's first goal of the game and the third was a quick shot from senior Jamie Haas.

Such a quick rebound is a comfort for the Cavaliers after a tough loss to Duke on April 7 left coach Julie Myers concerned about her team's ability to explode off the opening whistle.
