Oklahoma got its national title defense off to a good start as it defeated North Carolina, 41-27, in the Hispanic College Fund Classic on Saturday.

The Sooners scored 31 points in the first quarter to set the tone for the game.

Oklahoma quarterback Nate Hybl went 20-for-29 for 152 yards in his debut as the replacement for Heisman Trophy runner-up Josh Heupel.

Oklahoma scored the game's first 24 points, including a 14-yard fumble return by linebacker Rocky Calmus, before North Carolina's Julius Peppers scored on an interception return. But Oklahoma pulled ahead and held a 41-14 lead at halftime.

Backup quarterback Darian Durant relieved Ronald Curry in the second half for the Tar Heels and threw two touchdown passes.

Georgia Tech defeats Syracuse, 13-7

Wide receiver Kelly Campbell and running back Joe Burns set Kickoff Classic records to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 13-7 victory over the Orangemen yesterday.

Campbell caught a record 10 passes for 193 yards, and Burns had 113 yards on a record-tying 34 carries and scored the only touchdown for Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech drew first blood on a Luke Manget field goal. Yellow Jackets cornerback Marvious Hester then intercepted a pass at the Syracuse 6-yard line to set up Burns' 1-yard touchdown run.

Georgia Tech quarterback George Godsey completed 15-of-26 passes for 224 yards, including a 72-yard pass to Campbell in the second quarter. The reception gave Campbell the school record for career receiving yards with 2,392.
