Madison House program to unify volunteers

Over the next few weeks, as University students attend information sessions for Madison House programs, many will be running into six new faces.

Madison House recently created Community Among Volunteers, a new group of experienced volunteers aiming to promote unity among all of its members.

All six members of CAV have had extensive experience through Madison House and most have held positions as program directors of various volunteer programs.

"So many people just volunteer and leave and don't feel [that they are] a part of something bigger," said fourth-year College student Anita Gupta, one of the CAV program directors.

CAV's goals include improving communication among the 14 Madison House groups, planning more social events, recognizing stellar volunteer work, holding educational programs, and organizing joint service projects.

"We want to find new ways of recognizing the good things students are doing and give them the opportunity to share their volunteer experiences," Madison House Associate Director Mark Andrews said.

The new program also aims to allow all Madison House volunteers to remain aware of the efforts of other volunteers within different programs.

"If something exciting is happening within Migrant Aid or Big Sibling, they'll be able to share with another program," Andrews said.

CAV formed out of a group projects committee started last year to encourage volunteers from all 14 programs to share their experiences, said fourth-year Commerce student Julie Irish, one of the CAV program directors.

"I've been volunteering since the first day and there isn't a lot of crossing over of volunteers," Irish said. "We want to change that."

CAV plans to expand on that committee's work and eliminate the problems the committee faced with commitment and sufficient volunteer help, she said.

Members of CAV already have started their year with a program director summit and have begun the process of obtaining a grant for improvements to Madison House's boardroom.

The six program directors were selected through an application and interview process to serve for the 2001-2002 term.

Madison House Executive Director Cindy Fredrick will oversee CAV's projects throughout the year. This will be the only program for which she serves as an adviser.
