Cambodian Cuisine. Japanese Fashions. African Tribal Dance. All of these cultural facets that lie just beneath the surface of University life will become apparent beginning this Saturday in the Newcomb Ballroom at part of CultureFest 2001.

From 11:15 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., CultureFest will be a prime event during Family Weekend. The event is presented by the Parents Program, Cultural Programming Board, the Office of Vice Provost for International Affairs and the International Residential College.

"CultureFest allows various cultural groups to perform," student co-sponsor Mei Yei said.

Yei said that the event will feature performances such as a fashion show, singing groups, storytelling and various dances. University President John T. Casteen III and vice provost of international affairs, William Quandt, also will speak to kick off the event.

Yei added that there also will be exhibits presented by many of the organizations pertaining to individual cultures.

"Many of the groups have interactive activities so that people can take a little piece of the culture away with them," Yei said.

She added that the Cambodian Student Organization "will be writing people's names in on a rock to make a little paperweight" as part of the festival.

All of the events and activities are intended to highlight the cultural diversity of the University.

"We want to show the diversity that the University has to offer and that we are very proud of that diversity," Yei said.

Yei said that the organizations also will be passing out information to encourage enthusiasm about future events.

"The nicest thing is that all of the organizations have been so cooperative, they really do want to work together," Yei said. "I think that the theme of windows to the world will be very apparent"
