Virginia senior outside hitter Andrea Fischer broke the school service ace record against Georgetown on Tuesday with her 140th ace. She entered the Cavaliers' volleyball match with 136 service aces and passed Jo Anne Gilman's record of 139 aces with her fourth ace of the game. Fischer added another ace to bring her career total to 141. She also had six kills and two blocks for the match.
Despite Fischer's record-setting performance, Virginia (6-13) lost to the Hoyas, 3-0. Georgetown (13-6) hit an impressive .352 in the match, which dwarfed Virginia's .206 hitting percentage. Junior middle Simona Kuipers led the Cavaliers in hitting percentage for the second match in a row with a .556. She also added six kills and a match-high four blocks. Cavaliers' freshman setter Lily Phillips had 18 assists.
Tee time in Tennesee
The Virginia golf team finished sixth in the Tennessee Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions in Knoxville, Tenn., on Tuesday. The Cavaliers finished 13 strokes behind tournament winner Tennessee with a 14-over-par 854 over three rounds.
Virginia sophomore Kevin O'Connell tied for second in individual play with a three-under-par 207. O'Connell tied Charleston's Kyle Bradley and Auburn's Kevin Haefner with seven strokes behind Alabama's Nick Rousey, who won the individual title with a 10-under-par 200.
Steve Marino (211), Justin Goodhue (225) and Jeremy Luce (226) were Virginia's next highest finishers behind O'Connell. Marino finished 16th, Goodhue came in 58th, and Luce placed 60th in the tournament.
