Jones and Braves reach a deal

Instead of testing the free agent market, Atlanta Braves center fielder Andruw Jones agreed to a $75 million, six-year contract on Tuesday. With his current deal, the gold glover will stay with his club until the 2007 season.

Jones decided not to follow the lead of nine other Braves who decided to file for free agency after the season. Those players include closer John Smoltz, catcher Javy Lopez and All-Star pitcher John Burkett. Jones has been a member of the Braves throughout his career. Last season Jones hit .251 with 34 homers and 104 RBI. He also won his fourth- straight gold glove last week.

Pepper a finalist for the Lombardi Award

North Carolina's Julius Peppers was named one of four finalists for Lombardi Award, which goes to the nation's top collegiate lineman. The list is rounded out by Alex Brown of Florida, Dwight Freeney of Syracuse and Rocky Calmus of Oklahoma - all who have been semi-finalists before.

A group of sports writers and broadcasters, former winners of the award and Division I-A football coaches will pick the winner. Peppers is close to breaking a number of Tar Heel records. As it stands, Peppers has 29.5 sacks - 8.5 this season. The winner will be announced Dec. 5.
