Council to post bus schedules

University students too often find themselves standing at the bus stop wondering when the bus will arrive. This spring, Student Council aims to ensure that problem will end.

Council's Parking and Transportation committee now is working to post bus schedules at every University bus stop.

"Students have long wondered when the next bus is going to come, and these schedules will allow them to better manage their time and ensure their safety as they wait for the bus," said William Sowers, Council parking and transportation committee chairman.

Committee members said they hope to post bus schedules at each stop by the end of this semester. The University's department of parking and transportation still is working to customize the schedules to correspond to individual stops.

"The goal is to increase student safety, especially at night when the bus schedule changes and buses come less frequently," said Sarah Jobe, College representative and parking and transportation committee member.

The bus schedules with expected arrival times already are available on every University bus and in the parking and transportation office. Students also can obtain bus schedules online at www.virginia.edu/~parking.

The bus schedules have been available online, but there has never before been a conscientious effort to post the schedules and tailor them to individual bus stops, Sowers said.

"Half of the project was funded by the parking and transportation department and the other half was funded through gifts from the first, second and third year class councils and the vice president for student affairs office," he added.

Officials soon will put up framed plexiglass holders at the 40 most popular bus stops around Grounds.

The holders will provide a centralized location to post notifications of special parking and transportation issues, such as rerouting of buses during home football games. Numbers for the student escort shuttle and yellow cab service also may be featured.

Many students expressed anticipation for the arrival of the new schedules.

"It would be helpful if they put schedules outside because students never know if the bus has just left or if it is on it's way," first year Architecture student Jamie Sneed said.
