The Cancer Center Benefit Dinner hosted University women's basketball coach Debbie Ryan at their annual benefit dinner last night.
Proceeds from the dinner, which featured a video presentation honoring the late Sen. Emily Couric, went to the Patient and Family Support Services at the Cancer Center.
Ryan fought and won her own battle with pancreatic cancer, undergoing radiation and chemotheraphy in the summer of 2000. She has been involved in many benefits for the University Cancer Center, including the Mary Chapin Carpenter concert last spring that she co-hosted with Couric.
The dinner was sponsored by F.O.R.C.E. (Fighting, Overcoming and Responding to Cancer Everywhere), a University student group that supports cancer patients and their families. University Director of Athletics Craig Littlepage served as master of ceremonies.
Pearl kidnapping suspect says abduction was a warning
Sheik Omar Saeed, a suspect in the abduction of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, told Pakistani police that the kidnapping was "a warning shot" to the Pakistani president Gen. Pervez Musharraf for his crackdown on extremist Islamic groups.
Saeed, who is affiliated with the Jaish-i-Muhammad militant group, also said that the bombing of the Indian Parliament in New Delhi also was targeted at provoking India into retaliation. The militants behind the attacks hoped a counterattack from India would force Musharraf to relax his opposition to extremist groups, Saeed claimed.
Police were unable to verify Saeed's connection to the attacks in India.
